Any Advice Would Be Welcome

We have a child who makes a humming or droning noise when she plays. It only happens when she is concentrating, in the graphics area, or doing a jigsaw or in the sand. When she is dressing up or on climbing frame she doesn't. It is very loud and intrusive, especially if you are trying to work with another child. The children are starting to tell her to be quiet because it is annoying them. Also at the end of the session, her voice was quite croaky. I didn't get chance to speak to mum today to see whether she does it at home but will ask her on Monday. I did have another child who did this many years ago but her noise was very quiet and didn't bother anyone. She car…

Hi I have a child who is 4 and a half yrs old, he is due to start school this september. This child was adopted a year ago and has attended with us since that point. His background before this was rough, there was violence in his family and he had been with three temporary carers before his adoption. He was adopeted with his younger brother. The childs parents are lovely people and the child seems very happy with them. But there are some problems, I'd like to know what you think. This child, although loving and caring etc, seems to enjoy doing things he shouldn't, almost like he enjoys getting away with things. He will do the simplist of things such as rem…

Downs Syndrome

Hi all I wonder if you can help. I have a child coming to my Foundation stage class in September who has Downs Syndrome. They will be 3 in August so are young anyway but parents are insistent she comes to Nursery and I am sure it will be good for her. However, they are still in nappies with no inkling of toilet training on the horizon, are still crawling or walking only with the aid of a baby walker and are not talking other than making sounds. I have 21 kids and our class is manned by myself - a full time teacher and a Nursery nurse. At present there is no statement for this child as we have only recently learned that the parents want the child to come to us. We have no …

Sharing

We have a male child who will be leaving Nursery in the summer to go to school in September. It would appear that this child has an inability to share equipment and resources with other children in the nursery, and at times, he gets aggressive with others when either he wants what they have, or when the other children try to use what he has. We also have two other children who seem to have difficulty sharing, but both these children are slightly younger. I am certain that one of the children has difficulty in this area largely because of their age/stage of development. The other two children are beginning to concern me. I have been carrying out detailed observati…

Having worked in a nursery fror many years with different teachers, I have noticed thay all have had very different views when it comes to children's drawings. Some believe we should direst the children when they are drawing, so they gain a recognisable outcome and others allow the children to freely draw and have a picture only they recognise. what view should i follow? at present i believe in a bit of both.

Toddlers Lips Turning Blue

Hi everyone, Over the past week my 20 month old child has had an ear infection and diarrhea. Each day for the last four days I have noticed his lips turning blue - this has happened once each day (3 times in the morning when sat down playing happily and yesterday in the afternoon when we were out shopping). I have told my doctor this morning however I didn't feel very satisfied with his answer. He's one of the newer styles of doctor who ask you what do you think is wrong? why do you think it is happening etc? I have done an internet search and have been frightened by the results so though I would post here to all my friends who might have some experience of this. P…

Need Some Advice, Ideas

I have a child aged 3 yrs who has downs syndrome, but this query could relate to any child who needs language development support. I need some advice on ways to support this child in using the terms "I" "me" "you" She uses the persons name, ie: instead of "I am drinking", she will say " Susan drinking" ( talking about self) or "Peggy eating" instead of "you are eating" Part of it is that she tends to use 2 word sentences instead of three, however, she is capable of stringing more than 2 words together in a sentence. any games, phrases I can use,? I am role modelling the language ( sorry can't think of the term for it, is it person singular?) such as "I am …

We have a child in our setting who will be one next week. He is generally a happy child, full of smiles and cuddles, but I am getting concerned about his physical development. He doesn't like to lay playing on the floor, so sits, mostly propped up with cushions, with books, rattles etc. He has never been able to roll over from front to back or vice versa, although I suspect that this could have something to do with his refusal to play in a laying position. He can not pull self to standing even using furniture, he therefore cannot cruise. He can't even get into the crawling position without adult help, and even then when he is there on his knees and the adult lets …

A Very Happy Mummy!

Well, sent Natalie to pre-school today as part of the settling in plan we worked on. Basically, my managers felt that Natalie would benefit from a session a week that I didn't work, so she knew that she couldn't keep running to Mummy every time she got told off for something, or whenever things don't go her way. I was a bit nervous about it, I haven't really left her at pre-school/nursery alone before so I can understand how the parents of children in the setting feel! Anyway, when I went to collect her this afternoon, the supervisor told me she had been really good, marginally better than when I am there (which is a good sign, I think?!) and... she went to the t…

Freedom Of Information Act

don't know if this is relevant to any one but did you know you can contact a freedom of information officer in your local authorities and request information on how the money for children's centre has been divided. also i think you can find out how much the money authorities get for schools for each child. from what i can find out each child is now allocated £3600 if they are in main stream and what most authorites are doing because pre-school is classed as half day they are sort of halving the £3600 for the pre-schools. per child that is. hence the approx £1500 we get for 2 and half hours. does that make sense!!! I thought just to wind our local lot up I might do a reque…
