As part of finalising my GRTP year I have to host a whole school staff meeting on the misconceptions of early years education from both professionals in education and parents and carers prospectives. I would be very grateful for any feedback from early years practitioners and KS1/2 practitioners. Part of the focus will be the importance of play within the early years curriculum and further on through school life. Many thanks Jacqui x

We have a child who has been attending with mum since Easter. Mum wants to stay because the child isn't toilet trained and also the child didn't settle elsewhere. The child wants his own way all of the time and runs crying to mum each time an issue arises. Today he insisted in running out to the lobby area. Mum makes no attempt to correct him at all so we have to tell him firmly no. His mum was horrified and said that was why he refused to attend the first setting. Apparantly he doesn't like getting told off!!.After many more different incidents one of my assistants retrieved him from the toilet area he cowered in the corner and said" Don't beat me up"She quite rightly re…

I'm not sure this is a problem yet but I'm worried it may become one and I'd like to know other people's views. There is a little boy in nursery who has started dressing up in long dresses. He likes the embroidery and the feel of the material and enjoys dancing in them to make the skirts swirl. This is beginning to cause some problems. - The girls are non too pleased at having another person to share the pretty dresses with: one they feel should not be wearing them any way - A few of the boys have passed unpleasant comments. - some mums have exchanged looks - I think the boys father would be up set if he saw him in a dress, we already have pro…

Hi everyone, I have recently been appointed as an Area SENCO for the private and voluntary settings in my area. We offer practical support and encourage early intervention for children with SEN or who have a disability. Are there any other Area SENCO's on FSF, i would like to compare notes and experiences, share practice and learn how others are working. Lesley

I have recently moved my pre-school to different pre-school premises,so I have had 2 groups of children to settle together. The first term was spent focusing on P.S.E. This term we have been formally observing our new children and looking at their strengths and weaknesses. I have a rising 5 who has difficulty hopping, standing on one leg, climbing over the A-Frame and walking on the balance beam. I mention this to his mum who agreed that he does have difficulties climbing at the park.I thought of getting a wobble board and doing some simple brain-gym exercises to help does anyone have any ideas please?

Imagine this.. A child is seen for her 3 year check and the GP is concerned because she wont name the colours, he asks to see her again about a year later. One year on Child still wont name the colours, in particular yellow, green and blue, but mom and we, are happy that she knows them, she'll bring objects of a particular colour and group them. Mom says Gp is very concerned that she still doesnt name them and seriously thinks she could be colour blind. Is this GP mad or am I totally missing something? Mom could do with some reasurance.

Serious Child

Hi everyone. This may sound silly but does anyone else have a very serious child in their setting. This child is 4yrs old but does not play with the other children and just sits or stands and watchs the others. He will take part in group activities but does not appear to enjoy them, he just does what he needs to do and goes. He never smiles or laughs but is extremely articulate and clever. He is also obsessed with one of the other children and will just stand next to her and stare at her or watch what she is doing. I worry about him especially today as he seemed very sad and didn't want to talk. Tomorrow I am going to take half an hour to just observe him and see what hap…
