Any ideas for easter egg carriers for my Nursery class. I really want the children to make their own designs - perhaps with egg boxes. Any ideas where to start - I don't want everyone to make the same thing. Thanks, Tracey.

I am a student for a DPP course, and I am working on "Promoting children's development" (Core Unit 1 - assignment for external marking). There is a divergence between my totor's and my own understanding of the criteria (I refer to the E points). She wants us to talk in general about P.I.L.E.S. and only make reference and comparison with the child observed, she does not want anything like "this child" "target child", appearing on the assignment; she says this would be a child's study. I believe instead, we have to do a proper evaluation of the child's stage of developmentand compare it with what is required in 'developmental norms'. If anyone of you is aware about thi…

Handedness Question And Scissors

One of the children in our preschool group at four, has not yet chosen handedness. She swaps over at the mid-line of the paper, and her pencil control is fairly equal with both hands, although sometimes it seems slightly better wiht left than right. It is also quite advanced - forming letters and numbers and detailed drawings, using both hands. (We don't 'teach' this stuff, she just does it from choice) So far we are just observing and letting her make the choice, and we think she'll be left handed, but what about scissors? We dont have children's left handed scissors, so have taught her to cut with her right only. She's getting fairly competent, but as I say, we have…

Epi-pen Training?
by Guest- 9 replies

Hi all, I am new to this site but love it already I am currently in the process of helping to set up a new neighbourhood nursery, i will be the under 2's department manager I have been trying for about the past month to get hold of someone who could possibly deliver some epi-pen training to all of the staff as we are going to have a child with a very severe nut allergy. At first I spoke to the child's health visitor who insisted that it was the parents responsibility to show us how to do it and cascade the information, I wasn't very happy with this so instead tried a few local hospitals and health centres but to no avail I was then given a number of a nurse who wen…

Being Patient Does Pay Off!

Some of you might remember my thread a while ago about children getting messy. I was concerned about the fact that my three year old simply would not get messy, so was really reluctant to participate in a lot of activities. It was interesting to read other practitioner's thoughts. I decided to do all that I could to facilitate her development, not to draw any attention to the fact that she is so meticulous/perfectionist, and to relax and wait it out patiently. I also invested in some of the painting gloves and big textured brushes that I think Helen recommended. I worked with our parent partners (we run a parent co-op nursery for six children) to make sure we were consis…

Physical development

We have a child in our setting who is always falling over; not tripping over toys, etc., but for no apparent reason. Any ideas about where to go from here?

I'm doing some research on how physical activity helps children's cognitive development, and would like any feedback on Brain Gym activities that you believe may work with very young children (2.5-4). If you've got time to respond to this, I would be sooooo pleased. Many thanks!

Does anybody know anything about schemas in early childhood. I am a student at Roehampton university and schemas have been mentioned a few times and I am having difficulty getting my head round the concept. If you have any ideas let me know! Thanks!

Indoor Slides/climbing Frames

We need to replace our indoor slide/climbing frame. Have been looking at the Galt frame and slide (our current one is a Galt one) but on a recent talk on physical play was advised that new legislation may be coming into effect with regard to the slide having to have a run out as children can damage their spines. The Galt one does not. Does anyone out there have any alternative suppliers for play equipment of this sort. We need to fold it up and put it away every day so it has to be flexible and light!! This is obviously a farily major acquisition for us - probably in the region of £400-£500 and we need to make sure we look at every alternative. Please anyone any id…
