I've just had the luxury of half an hour on a Friday afternoon catching up with the website and watching this really beautiful short video, celebrating the first 5 years of a child's life. Until today, I hadn't really had time to learn the details around the focus of the Centre's work in years to come. I feel pretty upbeat about it! Apart from the stats that say only a quarter of the population understand the unique importance of the first five years, obviously....😧 I particularly liked the phrase 'positive protective factors' that a high quality early years experience can bring to children, particularly those in difficult and deprived circumstances. Have you ha…

In early April 2022, Ofsted published a new briefing - Education recovery in early years providers: spring 2022. You can read it here. This briefing draws on inspection evidence gathered in the spring 2022 term and discussions with early years inspectors about the ongoing implications of the pandemic on children. Ofsted highlights the impact of the pandemic on children's development, particularly in communication and language, social and emotional development, and physical development.

Have a listen to this podcast recording where Jules and Angelica Celinska, editor of EYE, talk about what it means to be a critical consumer of research, how we access CPD, and building communities of practice to support our learning. As I was chatting with Angelica, I reflected on how the FSF has been a supportive community of practice for many years.

The DfE have today announced that the reception baseline has been postponed until 2021. This will be of some relief to many, I think. https://schoolsweek.co.uk/reception-baseline-assessment-introduction-delayed-to-2021/

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/early-years-foundation-stage-reforms Whatever part of the EYFS you work in and whichever age range you work with, this consultation is important. Much of this is based on a pilot with a handful of schools this summer. You may not feel that the ELGs matter, if you are working in a nursery but believe me, they do. They are the expectation against which your work is and will be measured. Your part in the child's journey, towards those goals, is what is looked at by Ofsted in particular. The proposals around moderation and the EYFSP are a dilution of that assessment, in favour of the baseline. Further…

Education Policy Institute warns of childcare sector losing staff to the retail sector

The Education Policy Institute (EPI) has released a worrying report identifying great uncertainty over recruitment and retention, with growing reports of workers switching to the retail sector, in order to secure more favourable working conditions. The report, 'The early years workforce: A comparison with retail workers', highlights a worrying trend of effectively decreasing wages in the childcare and education sector (due to rises in cost of living etc) and the increasing of wages in the retail sector. Coupled with the availability and range of the retail opportunities against the requirement for qualifications in the childcare sector workers the EPI predicts a bleak out…

Ofsted’s Big Conversation On Monday 18th March I attended the London open meeting of the Ofsted Big Conversation. For anyone who isn’t aware of the Big Conversation, it is a voluntary organisation run by representatives from the Early Years sector. The purpose is simple: ‘To provide a communication forum where providers, who deliver Early Years care and education, can collectively bring shared areas of concern or common themes they seek further clarification on, to a representative from Ofsted, and receive a timely response,’ and ‘to provide Ofsted an opportunity to give updates on changes and direction of travel and to help dispel Ofsted ‘myths’.’ The Lond…

Invite for early years engagement events - curriculum workshops At Ofsted, you will know that we are developing a new Education Inspection Framework (EIF) for September 2019. We launched the formal consultation on our proposals in January 2019. You can let us know what you think about our proposals for early years by completing the on-line consultation. HMCI is clear that the ‘curriculum’, the educational choices we make for children, will be at the heart of the new framework. We use that word in the current early years inspection handbook, but have come up with a working definition so we are clear about what this means. The EYFS (educational programmes) …
