Revised safeguarding guidance for professionals working with children In response to recommendations from Professor Eileen Munro’s report, A child-centred system, the revised Working together to safeguard children guidance clarifies the core legal requirements on individuals and organisations to keep children safe. It sets out, in one place, the legal requirements that health services, social workers, police, schools and other organisations that work with children, must follow – and emphasises that safeguarding is the responsibility of all professionals who work with children. On the 21st March the NHS Commissioning Board also published its accountability and assu…

Petition against proposed cuts to staff/child ratios

Please can I urge you all to add your names to a petition against the Department of Education's planned proposals to cut adult/child ratios in all pre-school settings? Despite commissioning research which found that there were no benefits to making these cuts, the Government still thinks that allowing settings and childminders to care for more children with the same number of staff is a good and viable idea and will make childcare cheaper for parents. Hi all - Comic relief have asked us to help remind you about Red Nose Day on Friday 15th March, and that they have produced some free packs for early years providers. We've also opened up a Red Nose Day forum area, where you can talk about any plans or ideas you might have, and I would love to hear about any past exploits you've got up to. There may be prizes! :1b Please read their news release below:

My setting is a member of the PSLA and along with encouraging our parents and staff to make their views known in respect of the ratio changes proposed in Liz Truss' "More Great Childcare" report we have had an official PSLA petition on the go. Most of our parents and all the staff signed the petition and so I emailed the PSLA with the number of signatories and have posted the original petition off to them today. HOWEVER ..... this is the email response I received back from the PSLA - It would appear that the Government doesn't want to listen - please feel free to use the link in the text to make your views known - I shall be letting my parents know just how much the …

As the title of this topic suggests I am feeling a bit sorry for councils who seem to be getting hit from every direction, see this latest news piece; Councils 'failing' over sufficient childcare, says Daycare Trust The point is made as follows; But the Local Government Association's (LGA) David Simmonds said councils did not have any responsibility to actually provide childcare. "Our responsibility is to work with those private providers, to work with the voluntary organisations, to work with schools to try and increase the supply," And if you read Elizabeth Truss report she thinks council shouldn't be involved inspecting settings.....well if they don't in…

I'm going to a consultation event on Monday called Early Education and staff deployment. Can you help me with a list of things to think about bringing up because I know I'll forget and this is my chance to make sure we can get our views across. Any links would be good too, comments from the public and professionals so back up our views should it come to it.

Dear all Just in case you haven't spotted this I attach a copy of The first Ofsted Annual Lecture on Early Years, that took place on the 3 December 2012 and was delivered by Sue Gregory HMI, National Director of Early Years. The title of the lecture was; Investing in their future: how do we ensure our children get the good quality early years provision they need if they and the country are to succeed in the future? Annual_Early_Years_lecture_-_3_December_20121.pdf It makes for interesting reading. Sue

Hi all - (with thanks to Kay Watling for pointing me to it) Here's a new publication from the DfE, detailing 'proposals to build a stronger and more professional early years workforce, and to drive quality through everything it does'. It incorporates the Government's response to the review by Cathy Nutbrown : More great childcare - Raising quality and giving parents more choice There was a very interesting piece on the Today programme this morning, featuring Elizabeth Truss and Eva Lloyd, which I'll link to when it becomes available.
