Here's an interesting article in today's Observer, discussing the fact that nurseries are struggling to break even, and giving rates of pay for staff, managers and owners of PVI nursery and childminder settings.

New Eyfs

Hi I have recently heard about a local setting that has already started to implement the new EYFS, I was wondering if anyone else had been privvy to a sneak preview. I can't ask the manager as the information came through a staff member and I'm not totally convinced they should be doing it at all. I have seen the paperwork they are using but it looks very unofficial, I did wonder if they were on some kind of pilot. Anyone else doing it??

I read this with interest BBC News I think that if there are families who need support and want help then this could be a useful scheme. If you are involved in these pilot schemes and can offer more information it would be great to hear what sort of help is being offered and whether you think it is really good practical support.

New Parent Evening

We hold an information evening for new parents at the beginning of the summer term. I think it is a lot of talk from the headteacher, myself as the class teacher and others. I would be interested to know what format others use.

I've had a flyer through for a conference in London in May which looks great but is nearly £300! The Head has said to look for something cheaper/more local but if not to go ahead and book! Have had a google and looked at our County training and drawn a blank so just wondered if anybody had heard anything yet? I want to be ahead of the game

Cut backs have led the Isle of Man Government to the decision to close all their maintained pre-schools loosing 500 places and 20 jobs. They have never had universal funded places as we do in the UK. They will be providing vouchers for families on very low incomes to be able to buy a 2.5 place in a PVI setting, but otherwise parents will have to pay if they wish for a pre-school place in a PVI setting. Lots of sympathy from me if you are a member from the IOM working in a maintained setting.
