http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-12009209 Does anyone else feel that every time that some progress might be being made with resepct to EY, some Department of Education spokesman comes along and misses the point completely? I don't envy Claire Tickel doing a review of EYFS, is anyone going to listen to her findings when ministers have such an ignorant view of child development and early education?

Via Pen Green on Twitter, here is a link to a new Government document which outlines why the early years are so crucial. In its accompanying announcement, the Government says:- The Government is responsible for helping each and every child achieve their full potential, whatever their background or circumstances. We believe in trusting professionals to do their jobs, free from the central targets and bureaucracy of recent years. Most fundamentally, we believe that the Government should take action to support the disadvantaged and that this support, whether through free early education, the network of Sure Start children's centres, or intervening early with other servi…

CHILDREN'S WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL TO GO As part of the Government’s arm's-length body review and ongoing commitment to channel as much resource as possible directly to the frontline, Children’s Minister Sarah Teather announced the Department is withdrawing investment from the Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC). I just heard on News 24 that the Government are proposing to end the scheme to give free milk to children under five. Apparently it costs £50 million a year and if the plan goes ahead, this will stop next year. The idea is that the universal offer will be replaced with a voucher targetted at the less wealthy families which they could then use to buy fruit and veg or milk for their children. Just thought I'd share! Maz

The new government has issued its programme for government, you can find the whole document here http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/media/4090...g_coalition.pdf Here's a couple of highlights We support the provision of free nursery care for pre-school children, and we want that support to be provided by a diverse range of providers, with a greater gender balance in the early years workforce. • We will take Sure Start back to its original purpose of early intervention, increase its focus on the neediest families, and better involve organisations with a track record of supporting families. We will investigate ways of ensuring that providers are paid in part by th…
