I'm just reading the report on the Single Funding Formula from the Children, Schools and Families Committee. A sentence caught my eye and I wondered what you all think... 'we record our misgivings about the rather functional term “childminder”, which does little to recognise the caring relationships which often exist between the adult and the child.' Good to see childminders being given some credit by our parliamentary representatives, don't you think? Maz

Courtesy of twitter, I see that the Government has today issued the guidance regarding how the 15 hour flexible entitlement should be delivered. I can't find it online, but perhaps at this stage it is only for LA eyes! Anyway, I did track down the statement on the DCSF website which includes the following:- For the first time ever, parents will be able to ask their local authority to find them free early learning and childcare provision at the time they want and which suits their needs. New statutory guidance is being published today for local authorities, to guarantee parents greater flexibility in how they take up the free entitlement to early learning and child…

Wondered what you make of this article which reports the Liberal Democrat's children's spokesperson's view that practitioners should "strive for more as time goes on" and that "We've always felt in an ideal world that you would want somebody with fully qualified teacher status to lead an early years setting". Needless to say I've told her what I think! Maz

I just thought I'd share this which email I received today. You signed a petition asking the Prime Minister to "reject unconditionally > Recommendation 14 or the Primary Curriculum Review which proposes the > lowering of school admission age." > > The Prime Minister's Office has responded to that petition and you can > view > it here: > > http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page22357 I wonder why they think starting school at six would be such a bad thing when it works so well elsewhere

Hi, I saw something called a writing belt on an early years website and thought they looked really interesting. They are a bit like builder's belts but instead of tools they have notepads, pencils and old mobile phones in them. The idea is that they encourage the children in CLL around the setting and at any opportuntiy which may arise. I'm particularily thinking they would work for some of our boys and especially in out door play. I wondered if anyone had introduced them and if so were they are sucess? Thanks!

I've just found this item on the BBC news website about loopholes in the security of Internet Explorer and how these are being used to hack into people's computers. It says at one point that individuals may not be at a very high risk but those of us with children's details and photographs on our computers may want to be extra careful. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8463516.stm You might like have a look and see what you think. I've changed to Google Chrome for the time being.
