The FSF team has been made aware of an issue being discussed widely by local authorities and online concerning an individual responsible for the Sparklebox website for early years resources. An outline of the issue has been published online by the Hull GFL and is available here: Hull GFL news release Clicking the 'View this item' link further down the page gives further information from the South West Grid For Learning. Bearing in mind the advice from these organisations we feel it is appropriate to make FSF members aware of the matter, as the resource has been recommended on many occasions by members who make regular use of the website. As we have no direct k…

I just thought I would post this in case anyone was wondering what the ISA requirements are now the ISA has gone live. "Please note: ISA-registration for the Vetting and Barring Scheme does not start for new workers or those moving jobs until July 2010 and ISA-registration does not become mandatory for these workers until November 2010. All other staff will be phased into the scheme from 2011. Further information on how to apply for registration will be provided in due course." http://www.isa-gov.org.uk/

This is a report by Daycare Trust telling the government how much it needs to spend to provide children with the high quality early years education and care outlined in the Ten Year Strategy on Childcare. It's a shame that it focuses quite heavily on the costs of increasing the number of hours of free childcare available to parents and a little less on paying the rates which would attract more highly qualified staff to deliver the care and education. The comparison to the costs incurred by secondary and higher education are interesting, with an acknowledgement that investment in the the early years sector could reduce costs later on. We all knew that already didn't w…

Dear all In January Steve sent out a newsletter to all the FSF members. I was notified that quite a few were not delivered because the email address was no longer in use and so I was wondering if you could check to see if the email address you have listed is the current email address you are using. All you need to do is go to 'My Controls' which is found in the blue bar under the logo at the top of the forum index page. Scroll down and on the left hand side you will see a heading 'Options' and listed under it is a link called 'Change email address'. When you click on this it will tell you the address currently in use and allow you to input a new one. …

Hi all, I am increasingly considering these two reports and would very much like to hear other opinions. I am rather uneasy that such an independent, wide-ranging, erudite and academic study as Prof. Alexander's, which advocates extending the EYFS to 6 years of age (with consideration to raising raising compulsory school age to 6), seems to be being flagrantly ignored in favour of a much more restricted Government sponsored study by Rose, which is not only restricted generally but specifically prohibited from addressing the testing regime at all. That it is advocating an effective reduction of school age to the term after a child's 4th birthday I find particularl…

I really do not like the way this is going. How can they not understand that a child's emotional and physical wellbeing are fundamental needs which have to be in place on order for them to learn. http://www.cypnow.co.uk/bulletins/Daily-Bu...C-DailyBulletin Aaarrrggghh! How about this one; Outstanding schools wound be singled out to be given preferential treatment, as part of Gove's plans. They would be exempt from Ofsted inspections and could be fast tracked to become academies. If they don't get inspected how will anyone know if they are still outstanding? Is it me or did we just step back about 100 years?

With the impending hotting up of debate as we head towards an election, I have been exercised by thoughts of what policies our main political parties might hold with respect to Early Years care and education. I therefore contacted the Conservatives to ask them. Below is the trail of emails to date. I am none the wiser, as the trail appears to have gone cold. Does anyone else have any insight from Labour, Conservative, LibDem, Greens, Monster Raving Looney Party? Email 1 Hello, I am trying to identify the area within the Conservative Party responsible for policy formulation for the care and development of children in the Early Years – age 0 – 5 yea…

The Rose Review recommends LOWERING the school starting age. Personally I think this is potentially damaging for children under 5. What do you think? Please have a look at this petition http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/startingschool/
