I just heard that the Children's Minister Beverley Hughes is to stand down at the next election for what she calls 'family circumstances'. First we lose the head of National Strategies and now the minister responsible for us and the work we do is going too. I was just wondering whether Gordon Brown will now appoint someone else to the post - it could be the longest notice period ever depending on when the election is, and I wonder how motivated she will be to do the best job she can all the while knowing she won't be seeing any of these policies through. So who do you think would make a good Children's Minister, and why? Maz

Is it possible to get a secondment from one LEA to another or do they exist only within the LEA you're already in? I'm interested in a post which states secondments will be considered but it's in a neighbouring LEA so not sure if it's worth applying.

Hi all - For the information of those of you who subscribe via your local authorities, you'll find a little change designed to make your forum easier to find. Instead of having to dig through the great long list of local authorities half way down the page, we've now shuffled the furniture around a bit. You should find that you see only one local forum listed (your own) and this is right at the top of the forum index page. Others will not be visible to you, and you will find that they will also not show up on the last topic list on the FSF homepage.

The "Progress from the Start" document is currently not going ahead and the National Strategies team have no plans to publish detailed guidance on observational assessment in the early years. There is of course plenty of information about observation and assessment within the EYFS documents and CD-rom. Practitioners will need to find a workable way of managing the information they collect about their children, and e…

Not really FS, but early years in general I guess - the Every Child a Reader (ECaR) initiative seems to be having an impact, with us poor old boys getting a particular benefit. Read the press release here.

I have been looking at jobs for foundation stage coordinators and would like some help and advice about this. I have had experience of reception -almost 3 years worth and some limited nursery - although a lot of reception experience was alongside a good nursery. Is this good enough to apply for such a post? Any other things I should take into consideration?
