On Thursday 12th October early years ministers debated the impact of the newly introduced '30 hours free' funding scheme. The debate was called by Ruth George MP and both Robert Goodwill MP and Tracy Brabin MP spoke at length to set out their own views of the success of the scheme. You can watch the debate on Parliament tv by following this link. Nursery World have written eloquently about the debate in their magazine today. You can read their article here: Minister says providers are 'up for it' in 30 hours debate ... and if you don't want to watch the debate, you can read it here!

I'm quite confused about stretching funding... If a child is eligible for 30 hours funding each week and, for example, they attend for 20 hours, can the parent claim more than 20 hours so that when the funding is stretched over the year, they are getting their 20 hours free all year? I thought that the point of stretching the funding and the 30 hours offer was to help parents who work all year. If they can only stretch the amount of hours their child attends, there is no benefit to them, other than spreading the cost over the year, rather than paying during the holidays. Please can someone enlighten me? Thank you! :1b

This Nursery World item hit the headlines over the summer, when I was on my hols, and I missed it ... it is referred to again today in the Nursery World letters section. Have any of you actually been told this by your local authority or is it a comment that's got a little bit out of hand? Struggling nurseries told to do parents' ironing and use volunteers

While I've been away over the summer two payments have been made into the tax free childcare system by a parent. She is newly registered and these were her first payments using the system. Although I am registered and gave her all my registration details, nothing has shown up in my account. Could someone please help me with how to proceed/who to call. Before the hols I'm sure I saw others on here having a similar problem but my searches aren't giving me the answers. Honey

If you are restricting the number of 30 hour funding spaces available, how are you allocating them? Are you offering on a first-come first-served basis, or do you have any criteria for allocation? We're limiting the number of places available to 5, and although we don't anticipate that they'll all go (we only have 1 family who is eligible so far), we'd like to make sure our policy covers every eventuality. Thanks in advance

You may want to direct your parents towards this if they have had problems accessing the Tax-free childcare website. "If you’ve been unable to access Tax-Free Childcare through your childcare account for technical reasons, you may be able to claim compensation." Childcare Service compensation The PLA have commented on this ongoing situtaion. You can read their points here. PSLA have produced quick and easy explanation of the problems surrounding the 30 hours funding, that will help parents understand the underfunding and issues. I think it could be printed out and used as a display as well as giving parents the link. https://www.pre-school.org.uk/30-hours-interactive-explainer
