What If Your Staff Really Can't Do Eyfs

We had a long talk. I said that they had to be able to do EYFS with the next intake of children, so they could get in some practice on the current ones to round out their profies. This is the "observation" I was proudly handed X spent a long time building a house with the TradeName bricks. She worked hard. her Dad was very pleased and he took a photo. now to be fair - it was marked up a KUW & something else, I forgot which - but that was it. And it was the miniature real bricks with mortar. Lots and lots for them to have talked about. About a quarter of this year's children were in the EYFS range and yet most of my staff just don't get it. What can I…

Behaviour Maanagement - What If Staff Can't
by Guest jenpercy- 19 replies

Some of my staff have been working 9 or more years, the mopst recent 2 years. I am so fed up of asking them to be authorativewithout being authoratarian. Had a talk with all the children (and staff) and said that there was some confusion over our time to think. I clearly (several times) said that if you were told to stop doing something, that would be your first warning, so the second time that you were told would be second warning. I said that some people thought that the first warning wasn't until a member of staff said that you had a warning, giving you (at least) 4 but that wan't so. Repeat first bit. I then said to one of the children, OK so that's your 3rd, yo…

Still No Manager!

Hi all Well not really sure what we should do. The advert for manager of school club has been advertised for over a month and still only the one candidate. The deputy is getting annoyed but what can we do? Just heard of another school club about 15 miles away forced to close due to lack of staff! we are already competing with another newly set up school club in a village about 6 miles away. They are advertising for manager and staff. Perhaps if we just managed to get another level 3 playworker and then say a manager to just do paperwork, rotas etc but not actually be with kids? Thinking if that was allowed I may be able to do that? What do you think? Not sure ho…

Hi After some more info im afraid! The TA that is consulting with staff/committee at school club (used to be manager years ago) has updated the policies. All well and good but there seem to be a few missing according to ones that we have at preschool. Any school club able to give me a list of what they have? Have you included the EYFS commitments/themes in each of your policies? We seem just to have an EYFS policy. Thanks any info appreciated.

Hi, I think I know the answer to this one, but would value your views just to confirm! One of my members of staff was approached by the headteacher of the school that we run breakfast club at. The head said that she would be sending a child to us for breakfast club and that she would deal with all payment and we did not need to liaise with mum. She is due to come and speak to me about it today but basically this child is being dropped off to school very early, it is believed without having had any breakfast. So i think she is asking us to take this child so they are not hanging around before the start of school. I am not actually prepared to do this if th…

Hi All I need a second opinion on this matter. Within our setting we prepare snacks for the children, but nobody holds the relevant Food Hygiene Certificate, although a coure is booked for a member of staff to go on, but i am concerned that we are preparing food for children without being trained, am i being unreasonable to say i am not willing to prepare the food as it is against Health and Safety Legislation alongside the FSA?

Hi all Well as I seem to sort out one issue i find another! As this club has been without a manger for a year (maternity leave just given notice)...the temp manager has done the job without training (came in as temp and was not already working there) and the deputy has left (did 2 days per week!). Temp manager tells me as she has had no training she does not know what there really should be in place so i said would help her out. So far have got those staff whose first aid expires july to attend new course in june! identified they should all attend safeguarding/food hygiene course to update encouraged one staff to do level 3 after completing level 2 a couple of year…

Recruitment Woes
by Guest- 8 replies

Hi all Well comm meeting tonight and we have had one applicant for the job of manager!! Not a brilliant one at that! The chair even asked me if i would conside doing the job :( (i love my pre-school job too much!!). So we are thinking why only 1? Advertised as approx 30 hrs per week, £8.50/h so not bad (midlands based). Given the staff we have at the mo we know we need a strong people manager too. Not sure what we are going to do. We have said that we do not want to recruit the only applicant if not suitable. Deputy is suffering from stress doing the job and is desperate to step down. Any ideas anyone?

National Standards
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi all What I find really strange is that when oFSTED inspect out of school club they only really look at EYFS. So my question is are the national standards still important? Just thinking would it be good idea for new manager to be interviewed on EYFS and this or is it no longer applicable? I have a really good document about setting up school club from Gloucestershire CC but it was written in 2006!! Any advice appreciated!
