Hi, I run an afterschool club for children aged 4 -12 years old. I understand we need to observe children that come under 'early years' so until end of Reception. As anyone got any suggestions on what format can be used to track progress and some observation formats they wouldnt mind sharing please? As its an after school club I imagine it would be pretty baisc? What are the key themes/ elements to focus on as its forever changing! Any help/ suggestions highly appreciated!!! Dee Tree Tots Manager.

Hi, I run a nursery and an out of school club. So at our breakfast and after school club sessions, I have a mix of school children and preschool children. I ask for 7 days notice if parents want to cancel an out of school club session, in which case they are not charged. I just wondered what other OOSCs do when the primary school is closed unexpectedly? For example, the recent strike day or when the school is closed due to bad weather. I usually remain open, even on snow days, as most of my team can walk to work. I can see it's not fair for parents to have to still pay for breakfast or after school club if the school is closed, but it's not fair to me either! I al…

Hi. I have for a few years run a preschool on a school site and have often been approached by parents about the possiblity of running before and after school care. The school has undergone some development in this time and there is a building available to use for this purpose. My expertise is in early years, what advice can you give me. What problems have you found with registration? What qualities do I look for in a Play worker? Are qualified Play Workers easy to find? What else do I need to know that I have not thought about? Help anyone!!!

I run the village Pre-School and have been approached by the local school to run a new OOSC - school has had a new hall built and now have room to house the provision. I am unsure as to whether I want/need the extra work. I have no OOSC knowledge so the whole scenario is a scary one. I have read other threads on the site and there seems to be mixed feelings as to whether an OOSC is viable - the school is only small - taking children from reception to year 5. I don't know whether to set it up as my own business, integrate with the preschool (if committee agree) or try and set up so it is run by the school? Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi can anyone there help me please. I have been involved with a breakfast and after school club for several years now, which is based within school grounds but run as a separate business. We provide breakfast and then snacks in afternoon, sometimes with the need to heat in microwave, The school however told us there was no need to register with environmental health as we were covered within their setting. However I have recently been informed that this is not correct anymore and need to be registered separately. Can anyone confirm this for me please

I see everyone is reporting the lack of holiday care available to parents, and the cost of what there is. When we set up our OOSC, the advice from the LA was don't bother with a holiday club, there's no support and you WILL make a loss if you try.

Holiday Club Activities

Hi Well looking to tryand get some activities for Easter holidays and summer holidays. Just wondered if any of you hired people in to do activities? Im looking at all sorts ie sport, science, film, animals, etc but they all cost a fortune! Numbers are low during the holidays and trying to increase the numbers. However, not sure parents would want to be charged any extra for this (currently we are £19 for the whole day). Not really sure if school would be willing to fork out for these either (once they take club on) Just wondered what others do? Otherwise it could be a long six week holiday! Thanks

Hi So this is what happened... I got told that this morning a staff member didnt turn up for work (no notice...will deal with that later!). Anyway this meant that club was over ratio as manager called bank staff etc but noone could come in for the hour. Should she have stopped accepting children when she reached 16 (2 staff) and suffered the wrath of parents who were over this number? Children arrive at all different times at breakfast club. As it was she accepted all children due in but the 2 staff kept all children in one room My supervisor at work says she should would have turned parents away due to insurance, OFSTED etc, others have said as a parent you …
