Is there a legal framework that states what the staff-child ratio should be in an after school club??? Seem to remember something about over 8s being different?

We allow children to watch DVDs and videos at our Out of School club (if they want to!) but have had a couple of complaints from parents about this. There are always plenty of other activities for them to do but if they just fancy flopping in front of a film we let them. Can anyone else please let me know what stance they take regarding use of the tv? Thanks.

We have found that the problem of balancing what the children want to eat, what the parents want us to give them and the need for variety, has ended with us in a bit of a rut about what we offer as snacks in our Out of School Club. Does anyone have some fantastic, easy, popular and healthy ideas?

Blind child starting-ideas & help please

We have a blind 9 year old boy starting our after school sessions soon. He is completely blind and it looks like I can get funding for a support worker for him. As we have never had a blind child in our setting before I would like to ensure we have toys and resources which he can use but that can also be used by other children in the setting so they can play together. I have looked around and can find very little adapted resources for him apart from playing cards. His foster carer said he likes playing on the computer (sadly we can't afford one) and listening to quizzes on the TV and playing bop it which we do have. I would also appreciate any ideas for activities. We…

Hooray for our new CCTV

We have a very disruptive 9 year old boy who is constantly disrespectful to staff, fights with the other children, and is generally a real troublemaker. I have had the parents in a number of times to discuss his behaviour and they argue with me and can see no wrong in him. They are the same when called into school about him. I tend not to work before school sessions so have not seen the deterioration in his behaviour but staff yesterday said how dreadful the session had been with him. Fortunately my husband installed CCTV 2 weeks ago after I followed a thread about CCTV on the forum some months ago and realised what a good idea it would be to prevent staff from allegation…

Signalong/Makaton

Hello I am about to start a 'Signalong' after school club (for KS1). One child who has opted to attend has a twin brother with SEN and has learnt to sign with him using Makaton. My question is, will knowing Makaton and learning Signalong be confusing for her? I have no knowledge of Makaton, so do not know which signs, if any, are the same/different. Is there someone who could advise? Many thanks

How do you register your children?
by Guest- 4 replies

Hi. I run an after school club that has recently seen the number of children attending double almost overnight. At the moment we have a diary that we use as a register. We write in the which children are booked in for each session. As a child comes in we write down the time next to their name. As they are collected we write the collection time and parents sign to say the have taken the child home. Because our numbers have grown so much a lot of my time is now taken up filling in the diary (and drawing columns in the diary for each day!). As our system involves me writing in children in by hand, sometimes a child has been missed of the list and we have not realised, t…

At our OOSC we have a boy of 8 who is showing increasingly difficult behaviour. He is constantly disrupting the other children (throwing balls at them and breaking up their games) so obviously they don't want anything to do with him. We do say the usual things about everybody being welcome but it is wearing a bit thin. I'm afraid. Now he has started calling staff names and blaming them for all his problems. His parents have just split up and this has made the situation worse (although mum denies it and says he has always been awful!!) Mum usually comes in on her phone and never moves it from her ear while she collects him. The teachers don't seem to have particular conc…

Hi all Well might have to see the Head about this but wanted your views first. We are club that is now run by myself as part of school so no longer registered with OFSTED under EY or childcare register. From OFSTED info I have to run according to chidcare register even though not registered (if you see what I mean?) Am I right in thking that the min age for childcare regsiter is 18 yrs ie The registered person must ensure that at least two suitable persons who have attained the age of 18 are present on the premises at all times. So long as 3 staff then ok? The registered person must ensure that any person aged under 18 caring for children is supervis…
