I feel that 2008 may just be a good one for me. Why I here you ask well: 1) I am starting a tempoary job next week in a deputy postion within a new nursery covering for someone who is going on hols for 3 1/2 weeks. Plus it give me a current reference. 2) I have applied for a job that was in Nursery World yesterday that fits my level of experince and qualifications and is near to where I live (jobs are mainly down in London in the appointment section). 3) College is starting to get their act together at last and at least I will be able to complete this years modules. 4) This summer I will become a level 4 practitoner with 45 credits at level 5. After a year off work, I have returned to teach Nursery aged children. I have never taught this age group before and just wondered if anyone has any tips such as how to get their attention; doing group activities - I ask that one because I only had time to have 3 or 4 children do a craft activity yesterday afternoon. By the time we had chatted , helped with cutting and done the activity it was snack time. What kinds of quicker craft activities are there? I also found it quite hard writing assessment notes alongside the activity especially when there were constant floods at the water tray! I would be grateful for any tips -Thank you!

I Love My Grandchildren But....

I really do love and adore my two grandchildren, Millie nearly 3 and Jake nearly 8, but last night they drove me round the bend. Millie went to bed at 6.30 (almost fell asleep in her tea) downstairs at 6.45, had got her second wind. Finally got her to bed at 7.45. Jake followed at 9.15 (he was getting some of the answers right on Millionaire). Both downstairs at 9.40, both swiftly put back in bed. I went to bed at 10.20 cos they were both unsettled and awake. Millie got in bed with me, Jake told firmly to go to sleep. At 11, Jake was asleep but now Millie was in bed with auntie Leanne. At midnight she was in her own bed and asleep. between 2 and 5, I think that Leanne and …

after getting very excited about my move to our new centre and the new challenge of pre school, after the initial arrr factor, i have been told that there are currently no preschool children booked in to the new setting! this means im not needed yet. they said it could be weeks or months beofre there will be enough children to justify having a teacher, im really disappointed. however they want me to go over to the new centre to start up the baby unit and be the baby unit leader. at least i get to meet the new team and start at the new centre from the very begining. but as teacher i would have been getting a pretty good payrise, as baby unit leader i stay on what im cu…

Wolfie suggested we come up with some alternative standards for Early Years Professionals which is an excellent way of providing a bit of light relief or venting spleen for those of us in the throes of/contemplating EYPS (indeed for anyone who has a wry view of life in early years!). The real standards cover all the aspects of what an EYP does in their professional life and the idea is that candidates have to show how their practice meets the standards (bit like an NVQ?). The challenge is to come up with a description of practice that is joyously non-pc, illustrates what we'd like to do in a given situation if we were brave enough, or 'celebrates' wonderfully inappro…
