Pressure is on me -science week coming up, take it one step at a time....... Boil some red cabbage, keep the water (eat the cabbage). Use the water in portions. Let children add vinegar (or lemon juice) - an acid - and watch the red cabbage water change colour. Let them add sodium bicarbonate (bicarb=bicarbonate of soda or baking powder) - an alkali. To and fro with these. It's magic! Make volcanoes: a pile of bicarb (you can mix in some powdered food colouring), and some vinegar or lemon juice and it "erupts". Put some bicarb and vinegar in a bottle, put a balloon over the neck (I suggest you blow it up by mouth fisrt then use it after it has deflated).…

Hi everyone! I hope this doesn't seem like a silly post - here goes. I come to this forum every day now, and can't imagine not having it. So my conscience is pricking at me - I should make some kind of donation. The thing is, I don't have a clue about how much to give. I don't want to give a silly little amount - it does mean a lot to me to be able to come here. But I don't want to give a huge amout due to my wretched poverty stricken state!!! Any ideas, anyone? How much do you need to keep it going, anyone prepared to tell me how much that gave? Can I make it like a subsciption & give a bit each month? You get the general picture, please help! D…

Integration Of Nursery And Reception Classes

This is the first time I have done his but I am hoping that someone out there might have some good ideas for me. I am the Early Years and KS1 coordinator in a small independent school. I am taking over the Reception class in September and would like to make better links between the Nursery and Reception classes. At present the classes work quite independently of each other but I feel a better link could be made in terms of space, movement of children and staffing requirements. I have already started a better link with planning and now we will plan across the two classes on a two year cycle of topics. I will have to win over the staff and make sure I don't alienate par…

Got up this morning to find thick snow. Have had to close the playgroup as I'm not chancing taking my car up my lane. Most of the schools are closed too. Yipee! A chance to catch up on all that paperwork. Sorry to all you folks going in to work this morning. Carol

Today I need cheering up. I attended a Primary Strategy Day for Reception Class teachers. We were told: we must get children to acheive all the ELG's or we are letting our Y1 teachers down. (This regardless of age on entry) We mustn't allow messing about such as arguing over equipment etc in role-play. We must begin a set Lit. and Num. in term 3 because transition should be managed at the end of R and not at the beginning of Y1. Last of all Literacy and Numracy in outdoor play involved children copying letters on easels outside, filling in 2 missing numbers on a hopscotch, and taking junk box modelling outside. Somebody is in the wrong job and I didn't used to think it w…

On the eve of the Foundation Stage Forum's first anniversary for those of you who are on half term next week hope it's a good one! I'm wishing for better weather-raining, AGAIN, here in Stockport at the moment! I've got a banging headache and am supposed to be out on the razzle this evening-I think I'd better have a lie down for half an hour! Anyway, keep posting if you're around next week and hopefully lots of us will meet up tomorrow afternoon in the chat room-at about 5! Linda
