Protecting The Gift

I wanted to recommend Protecting the Gift by Gavin de Becker, to anyone who is interested! I just read it and it has has a major impact upon my thinking. Essentially, it is about protecting children from all sorts of danger. (The part about gun safety is not particularly relevant to those of you in the UK, but makes interesting, hair-curling reading anyway!) De Becker -a leading safety expert - dispels many of the myths about Stranger Danger and talks of how to raise children to be less likely to ever be abused or abducted. The strategies are mainly for older children than the early years, but there are many awareness-raising points for adults. I think this i…

Can anyone recommend any stories about stranger danger and "saying no"? Would like something that is a good story, to get the message over, that won't worry one particularly sensitive child (and her Mum) too much. Jean

Am really glad to have found this site. In september I will be teaching a Reception/Y1 class for the first time. Have always taught Y2/3. I'm a bit excited but mostly terrified and wondered if anyone could recommend some books that will help with planning ideas, activities etc. Thanks in anticipation. Anne

Smooth transitions has been written to help everyone with a professional or personal interest in providing five year olds with a virtually seamless, stress-free move into Key Stage 1. It begins with a review of the successes of Foundation Stage Curriculum, and explains how it was constructed using research-based evidence on how young children learn best. The book offers suggestions for working with colleagues across the two Key Stages and gives practical advice on managing the transition process. The authors suggest that by providing a child-centred curriculum, one which is learning (not teaching) focussed, year 1 teachers unfamiliar with the Foundation Stage are encou…

Hello One of my favourite books is "Shaun's Wellies" published by and available from Norfolk Traveller education Service. This is a beautifully illustrated, high quality lift the flap book about Shaun who cannot find his wellies. He is off to playgroup and needs them very badly. He looks every where for them; under the churns, behind the trailer, in the back of dads truck, but no luck. He goes of to playgroup without his wellies and is really quite sad. However - when he gets to playgroup he realises that his wellies were there all the time and he goes of happily with the other chiuldren to join in with the fun of pond dipping. I love this book - as do the…

Unlearning discrimination in the early years by Babette Brown (Trentham books - ISBN 1-85856-122-1) Challenges some of the preconceptions about early child development, enables those working with young children to talk about discrimination. It includes this poem - Through the eyes of a child The Travelling life was wonderful Nothing to do but play Until we moved onto a site And you're starting school today Don't put him next to me My Mam'll have a fit They never have a wash And they might have a nit Watch him try and write He can't even spell his name God, he is so stupid Isn't it a shame He's sitting drawing pictures Of a horse and caravan He…
