I've been looking at these two lovely books and you can read the reviews by clicking the titles. Two Mums and a menagerie Two Dads The "Two Mums" book holds up more a story in it's own right whereas the "Two Dads" book is more about the 'having two dads' aspect. Many children have parenting arrangements that differ from the 'mummy and daddy at home' set up and both of these books do a brilliant job of raising awareness in very young children that it doesn't matter who your parents are: unconditional love, fun and the more mundane aspects of family life are common in all happy families.

This is a very comprehensive textbook of child development. It stands out from the crowd as it includes access to an extremely innovative exciting website with video clips, quizzes and further learning materials. An excellent staffroom resource for CPD but also an invaluable purchase for those studying of child development at any level. You can read my review here.

I have reviewed this book today - I loved it. It strikes an excellent balance between adult led and child initiated learning and puts mud kitchen play into context explaining and describing the potential learning that is going on. I would use this in my setting very readily as I could see the benefit for both children and practitioners alike! You can read my review here: Mud Kitchens and Beyond. 50 exciting ideas for investigative play

I've reviewed a book that would be incredibly useful if you were thinking of doing some work with your staff on observations, assessments and planning. I think it would be a great purchase. It could be delivered over a series of staff meetings and all the resources, ideas and training materials are either in the book or are downloadable from links detailed in the book. At £20 69 (on Amazon) it's not a cheap book - but if you viewed it as 'training' for a whole staff team it's a bargain! You can read it here

I've started the book reviews up again! (Hoorah!) The first one links nicely into any theme around animals or transport. More excitingly for me it gives you the opportunity to get children thinking philosophically about how and why we have rules. This would lead brilliantly into any discussion about rules to protect you and rules in consideration of others - this would be a lovely PSED discussion in any pre-school group and would address some of the questions posed by the British Values requirement. The Amazon link on the review gives you a couple of sample pages to see To read the review click here!

Just wondering what everyone is reading over the holidays? Please don't say Nursery Year in Action! (Even though I have ordered a copy - lol!). I'm going to read 'I let you go' after Christmas. Not too taxing.

Just read this whilst on half term in the sunshine last week.... I managed to escape! Loved the book but what a disappointing end. And wasn't it scarey just how troubled Amy was?
