Ratios In A Unit?

I know its probably been asked lots of times but how many staff do you have? I've been asked to work in a unit with 22 Reception and 19 Nursery children (in September, so that's before the January and Easter intakes) overseen by 1 teacher and two teaching assistants. Can that work?? Is that covered by the 30 reception/13 Nursery ratios?? I watched the children outside today and it just seemed unsafe. How do you run your day for a mixed group with 3:41? Yikes. Please advise.

Setting up a Foundation Unit

Hi all, I'm a Reception teacher and Early Years Coordinator, who has been given the task of researching the organisation of a FSU, in our school, ready to discuss at a meeting next week. We currently have a pre-school on site, which is not managed by the school and is going to close in the next few months. After many meetings with Early Years Consultants and Governors, it has been decided to set up as an FSU, with me taking a key role in setting it up and overseeing it. I'm planning on going on some visits and am very excited by the challenge, but was wondering if anyone here could offer any suggestions for how we organise the day, timetables, use of adults …

I currently work in a small rural school, teaching a small reception class of 11 children. We are in the process of opening an FSU to include pre-school/nursery aged children mixed with Reception and am looking forward to ours opening after Easter (scary but exciting!!!) I have been to see other settings that are comparable to ours and saw how well they can work. I am just wondering how FSUs work their planning. At the settings I visited, half had separate reception and nursery plans and the other half did it through differentiation. I'm undecided which would be better so thought I could ask on here for the pros and cons to how you plan in your FSU settings.

Dear all, From September our school Nursery will no longer be run by a teacher but by an EYP. I am the Reception class teacher and EYs lead and will be overseeing the Nursery. We want to name our EYFS to incorporate both the Nursery and Reception but don't really like the word 'unit' as sounds a little institutionalised. Does anyone have any alternatives that we could refer ourselves to which is not 'EY's Unit' Many Thanks ::1a

Hi, Hope you are all having a restful holiday. I am starting to think about September when I will have a mixed Nursery and Reception class. The majority of the class will be in Reception in the first instance and the majority of these are summer born. Out of my Nursery children, 1 is a rising 3, 2 are already 3 and 2 are entering their second year in Nursery. In my head I am imagining a timetable that has majority free flow and that staff use objective led planning. I am also imagining times when we have focus teach but only very short - these are literally focus teach and then we look for this in free flow. These would be phonics and maths. Literacy promo…

I am supporting two schools that are looking at merging their preschools and reception classes to form a foundation stage unit. We are based in Bedford Borough and both schools are keen to visit another school fairly local to us that is already running in this way- please do get in touch if you are in any of the local LAs and would be happy for a visit- Camb, Northants, Central Beds, MK, Bucks, Luton ideally. Thank you so much

H & S madness?

Does your FS keep dried food items that may be out of date for malleable play or creative play? We have recently been told that any food item that is out of date must be disposed of. This includes out of date food colouring must not be dripped into the water tray water, out of date pasta tubes cannot be used for threading and out of date rice must not be put in the tuff spot with the mark making tools. It has been difficult to find any solid evidence to argue this point. Does anyone have any? Thanks.
