Reggio Emilia

Hi Everyone! I recently attended a conference on Reggio Emilia in Birmingham. Prior to this I knew a little about the work of these nurseries. I was inspired by the conference and some of the ideas used and shared by other practitioners. Some of my staff are also interested in this way of working and we would like to develop this further. The first step we are taking is we will not plan in the way we ususlly do, but empower the children to chose a theme and we will go along with this - without a time scale. I was wondering if any members have adopted the Reggio approach or some aspects of it in their settings and how it has worked. I'd be very intertested to read your…

Can anybody help with some advice on writing an assignment dealing with issues arising from the intro of the FS. I have research from SPEEL etc, but I would welcome some personal experiences from those who were teaching in teaching this age group before the intro of FS and what diffs the Guidance has made.

Hi All, would just like to point people towards an interesting article in the Guardian regarding the education of Gypsy Traveller children. The Plowden Report, back in 1967 stated that these children's needs were not being met and they are still dramatically underachieving. Creative thinking and cultural understanding is needed to raise achievement and reduce the baggage parents have of their own schooldays in order to make school a positive and enriching experience for these children. Early Years workers need to create links with pre-schools and schools to allieviate fears parents of Gypsy children have. lesley http://education.guardian.co.uk/egweekly/s...1020986,00…

Staff Ratio In Reception

Please can anyone advise me on Ofsted guidelines on the ratio of staff to children in reception? I will have 20 reception children but have to send them outside to get to the toilets (NOT ideal!) Also, if the teacher is alone with the class and say, someone wets themselves and another bumps their head and needs help all at once, how do they manage being unable to leave the children and get help? I am going to be teaching in the school hall which is away from the main building- I have been thinking I may have to use my mobile phone to call the office for assistance at such times (Ha!) (and borrow an LSA from the child they are supporting ) Some of the kids are…

Outdoor Play

We have just had our final visit this year from our advisory teacher. She has suggested that we concentrate our future development on outdoor play and wants me to think about what we could do over the summer break. (And here was me thinking I was going to have a rest!!! ) The only problem is we do not have a secure outdoor area. We have a small grassed area at the front of the church and we take the children out there when the weather is good for playing games and using the parachute etc. On these occasions all the staff go out with all the children, so it's easy to keep an eye on them. She seems to think OFSTED might pick up on this when we are inspected and wants to …

Trying to establish working hours for a Nursery Nurse, who we have been supporting with day release throughout her training (which has taken 3 years not 2). She was employed initially as an unqualified nursery nurse to support in Reception, with a 32.5 hr contract which was reduced temporarily to 30 hrs when she had trouble with childcare arrangements. She has never resolved those problems and actually works the same teaching hours as the full time LSA who has also trained alongside her ie 25 hrs. They have both qualified or are about to and we wish to employ them as Nursery nurses from September with the afterschool planning, display etc. commitments. Our other NN wo…
