This evening we will be talking about how we support staff in the setting to be the best they can be: When staff start with you what do you do to help them understand the philosophy and ethos of your setting? How do you support staff during their first few weeks with you - do you have buddying or mentor systems? When staff are not working in the way that you want them to how do you help bring them back to the agreed setting ethos and philosophy? Which CPD courses have had the most positive impact on your staff and setting? If you could afford it, what CPD would you buy for your staff to improve your setting? What is your most common staffing 'gripe' - from them to you a…

I know some of us like to pop into the 'Chat room' from time to time and eat cake and drink wine and generally put the world to rights ... but ... I was wondering - how about we brought the chat room out into the forum once in a while but agreed in advance what the topic of conversation would be? This is my idea: We agree a day and time and I set up a thread on the forum in the right place (management , or inspections etc etc) You lovely people sign into the forum and find the thread and we can chat and share ideas 'in real time' I know that sometimes people post questions and then it can be a few days before we get a full range of replies If it is successful we…

I have just completed my EYPP justification record for the year, or so I thought. But have discovered that I have another £121 to spend. The children who we are receiving it for are not delayed in their development in any area. (This having been addressed with previous EYPP) I know its a nice position to be in to have money to spend but I am struggling to think of something that I can directly link to these children. We have just had some cable drums donated to us, which all the children love, but I am really keen to transform some of them into small world tables and mark making tables. Do you think that I can justify spending the money on the materials to do this? L…

Hi I wonder if someone could help me?? Long story short - we used to have the technology to print small passport photos to go onto name cards for self reg - but sadly no longer! I have an iPad and a camera (camera does'nt connect with very old laptop) and a printer! Does anyone know how I can get an A4 sheet of small photos for self reg cards? A free app maybe? - I have trawled but cannot find one suitable..... Or indeed any other ideas for name cards - without photos.? We used photos to help our 2s and 3s. Really appreciate any ideas. - Raf

Hello, I work in an international school as a Nursery teacher and Head of Kindergarten and am currently completing an International Primary Leadership and Management course. Our school starts at age 1yr 7 m and goes on to yr 10 at the moment and the focus of my course project is handover between EYFS year groups to each other and to KS1. It would be great to get a wider perspective on what people actually want or need through handover and how useful you find data or other methods of handover that you use or have used in the past. I have some questions (below) that I am asking the staff in our school, but if you have other points to make please do, any and all …

I have just been looking at the website of a group not too far away from us ( research!)......and i saw under 'school readiness' that from September, the setting is no longer going to have a seperate 'rising fives'........or whatever you call it in your setting..........as new guidance from Ofsted and their lead teacher suggests they should be simply doing activities such as dressing, name writing etc during the course of their normal routine. HOORAY!!!!!! I LOVE this....given that children go into school so early, I think it's wonderful that common sense is starting to prevail. We don't have a seperate session either, but I'm interested in the quote that Ofsted say …

Hello, Does anybody know the rules and regulations for Nursery staffing? Do you have to have a qualified teacher for a Nursery within a mainstream school? If not, how many nursery nurses etc would be acceptable? Thank you for any help/advice!

One of our children has quite bad eczema (her face and arms are always dry and sometimes the skin is broken). Her parents have provided emollient cream for us to apply whenever she needs it and are asking the GP for a dermatolgoy refereral. When mum brought her in this afternoon, she said we needed to keep the child away from the sand while her eczema is so bad. I explained to mum that while I fully appreciated that the sand sticks to her cream and then needs to be washed off, and that this makes the eczema worse, we still need to have sand (and the digging area) available to all the other children in the preschool. I showed her the sand pit and digging area …
