What do you do about children who scatter everything off tables or tip out boxes onto the floor ?...puzzles, blocks, sand, books...anything and everything - often without even stopping to look at / play with it first...and then move off to something else. They really seem to just cruise from one area to another and if they see anything they can move onto the floor that's exactly where it goes. We have reduced the tables to the minimum...just one fixed and a selection of other items are on open shelving for free access. The children are all two years or thereabouts and I know it could be schematic play in some cases..in others its just imitation / bored??? ... just w…

Hello all, In a couple weeks time I'm leading a Music and Movement session in a local children's nursery with up to 26 children aged 2-5. My usual sessions are aimed at babies under 2 years, so I was wondering if anyone had some activity ideas? Ideally I need activities that can be done with a very large group of children (plus practictioners and me), with varying stages of development, that incorporate the use of musical instruments. Thank you!

Hi, I'm looking for some inspiration for my main display board. Last term, we displayed pencil drawings that the children had done of themselves with speech bubbles - this was used as part of our fine-motor, pencil grip assessment and was done very sensitively (i.e. we didn't call children across but carried a clipboard, paper and a mirror around with us!) Some children didn't draw themselves, of course, we went with that. Anyway, it's time for a change, and I'm desperately trying to think of something that won't end up being to teacher-directed. The board is not really big enough for each child to have a space each (i.e. for a learning story wall) - am thinking more a…

Hi, We're having that age-old problem of domestic role-play happening around the setting and not just in the home corner with a particular concentration of it in the book corner. To be fair, the children are often reading a story to the baby who is cuddled up on the pillows, so in a way I don't want to stop this as at least they are looking at a book. However, the book corner isn't big enough for any other child to get in who just wants to read a book. We have a small sofa and large floor cushions in the book corner at the moment. I moved the sofa out of the home-corner as no-one was using it, other than to stand on to peek over the shelves! I have tried asking the chi…

We have been offered some money from the PTA and we were thinking of getting a couple of trim trail elements particularly the 2 ropes between 2 posts one! Can anyone recommend a company that they have used for this type of equipment? Any other outdoors equipment that you are really pleased with? We currently have crates, digging area, playhouse, wooden and soft bricks, a balancing system, large and normal tyres, trikes and scooters, tuff spots on stand, large water tray, P.E. Equipment (that is a bit tired), tables and stools, mark-making trolley. We are also in the middle of painting our new mud kitchen and are going to order sleepers to make a sandpit. I was think…
