Hi I have always been told not to make young children sit cross legged on the carpet,as children’s development is unique to all and this could cause problems. I have just started at a new Nursery and the Teacher physically manhandles their legs to a cross legged position. I feel very uncomfortable with this because of what I have been told over the years. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi! I haven't been on for a few weeks, so Happy New Year and hope you are all well. We have recently removed all our items from our roleplay area apart from the telephones, a till, an armchair and a small table with chairs. The reason behind this was the constant mess that the children made - everyday nearly all the items would end up on the floor and stood on. We tried different strategies to encourage respectful use of the resources but came to a bit of a dead end as nothing seemed to work. We had set up this area with real plates, cups etc and loose parts for food (corks, small natural blocks etc) there was also blankets and material and open-ended dressing …

Hi! A few of our children in our Reception class have taken to saying "You're not my friend/You're not my best friend," when a peer has something they want/they don't want to play with them at the moment. We have done work on emotions and talk ed about how our words make our friends feel. However, we do avoid saying statements such as "we are all friend" or "everyone can play with you," as that is not teaching children how to cope in reality. We use conflict resolution but wondered if anyone has any other ideas of how to explain simply to children that we need to be civil if not friends! It's mostly the children with older siblings that use these phrases so may…

Hi. Could I get an insight into provisions policies and procedures on rice play. On many forums and groups, practitioners use dried rice in play which is plain or coloured. We have been advised that we remove rice from our provision for all ages as it is not suitable for any child to play with due to the potential risks it can present.

I have a member of staff on maternity leave. She has asked to have the holiday pay she will accrue while on leave paid throughout her maternity leave instead of taking it as holiday at the end of her leave. She has given me the dates that she wants as paid holiday and I have just noticed that they are all on the same day of the week, when she works 2.5 hours longer than the other days. Is it reasonable for me to say I will pay her holiday pay on a mixture of days that she can choose, but not all on her long days? Edit to say: I have put this in the wrong area, but nearly everything in the drop down menu was 'greyed out' so this was the closest I could choose!

I have a child starting the nursery and the parents do not believe in any vaccinations for the child. Therefore the child has had no injections. What are everyone's thoughts or policies on this. This is new to me and I do respect parents wishes but I'm concerned about keeping everyone safe from harm/illnesses.

We work in a shared building, it's old and often the floors are very dirty. We have always used bleach to clean the mops and the floor, but have had a complaint from a new parent this morning that the smell of bleach is too strong and she would rather her son was exposed to germs than the chemicals used to clean. Anyone else experienced this, what alternative products do you use. We have tried anti-bacterial floor cleaner, the germs are probably gone but the floor doesn't look clean afterwards

Hi all, I would like to ask what everyone’s thoughts are around every child having to take part in an adult led activity? I always ask and encourage children to join in but was told today by manager that all children should take part in the adult directed activity following whole class activity. I feel this is just like a watered down version of NC. I feel that early years is not about getting everyone through a planned AD activity but giving them a choice instead? It’s a new manager and they said they always carried out whole group then AD activity with everyone? Could I please ask opinions? I’m feeling very deflated!
