Hi just wondering if any settings out there go for regular walks, for example to local rivers or woodlands? We have insurance, permissions and risk assessments for local walks to the park, shops and immediate local environment, however we would like to introduce some forest school inspired activities and den building in the nearby woodland, does anybody know if there would be anything extra we would need to do? there is a small shallow river running through the woodland, do we need to notify Ofsted with us being near water? Or would it just be a case of risk assessing and being extra vigilant and increasing ratios? Thanks in advance everyone.

Hi All I have been mulling over the role of the key person as staff at my setting have varying ideas of what they should not be doing. I feel I need to pull together to ensure we all have the same expectations of their role. I.e. learning journeys, monitoring where their children are within the EYFS. We all have the children at heart and want positive relationships with the child and their family its more the paperwork side. Therefore is there anyone willing to share what they expect their staff to do i would be grateful. Skippy

I've been surprised by the responses I received yesterday from a facebook 'share' I made. This is what I shared:- 'Pinched from Marc Armitage via Marc Armitage at Skitzy PlayNEWS: JUSTICE MINISTER DEFENDS SMACKING CHILDREN “The Conservative minister, who has two grown-up children [said] smacking young children sometimes "sends a message".” Well he’s right there. Form a queue everyone.' Now, I thought that was quite a light-hearted, humorous way of getting a serious point across. I don't usually share his posts, just like them because I am interested in what he has to say. These are the responses I got:- 'I think that a smack on the bum for really bad…

Hi I need your help! I set up an exploration table last term which has been quite successful. On the table I have a templated area which includes 2 magnets, 2 mirrors, a colour viewer with a number of colour paddles, 2 teleidoscopes and 3 magnifing glasses. Then there is a space on the table for objects. This is where I struggle - what sort of things do you have out in your exploration areas? I have shells, cones, pebbles etc at the moment but short of buying something (which I MUST STOP DOING!), I struggle to think of new things - even if I take into account interests. Also, do you have a permanent selection of natural things, then add one or 2 new things from time to …

Need some ideas really for the exploring changes part of this. We are going to compare raw eggs and boiled eggs. Melt chocolate, melt ice and then freeze again, make jelly. Any other ideas would be welcomed. :1b

Yesterday we took delivery of our new tables - today my partner got home from work early to help assemble trolley - halfway through assembly , I turned to him to say - 'it will go through the door won't it?' as we were in the back room not the hall . so after measuring the opening and breathing a sigh of relief, we continued the assembly . Then I realised that we had 2 other doors to get through -oops . we ended up taking it out of building via yard and through fire doors ! but have to say its's fab with all 12 new tables in Heather, campanula and lime - and all the boxes will be used on Monday for 'Box Day' - decided to put out only boxes with a few enhancements and gl…

What kinds of things do you have out in your music area / for your continuous provision for music for children to access independently? I remember someone said (I don't know if it was on here or on a course) that it would be impossible for children to have the chance to fully achieve the musical ELGs without a good music and movement type area - and I must admit I don't have a good one! Any ideas or photos would be hugely appreciated!
