I've been doing lots of observations of pencil grip since term started and unsurprisingly there is the usual wide range! My question is for those with a 'less developed' grip do I: - teach them how to 'do it properly' - let them develop themselves by modelling and letting them get bigger? If the first can anyone give me any pointers about how I could go about it?

Hi I just wondered if anyone still uses leap into life? I have never really got to grips with it and thought maybe I could put a programme together using the progressions’. Does anyone have any formats they could share that they use to record on? Thanks Skippy

Hi We have just had our Ecers and scored low in diversity! Now I have looked around I see what our advisor means. We have the usual coloured doll, images, and some books but actually lack anything else! How bad is that! We have no children at present from a multi-cultural background either! How do you show diversity?

Yet another snack-time question! Sorry! In our Nursery, having tried out different ways of doing rolling snack - with limited success mainly due to lack of staff, we do our snack-time together. We do actually like having it together ('we' being the children as well as the adults) for the social benefits etc (I don't think many of our children actually get to eat with other people.) However, we always having after tidy-up time around 10.45pm, before key group-time and then home-time at 11.45pm or lunch-time at 12 noon for those who stay. We have avoided doing it at any other time to allow children to have extended periods of CI play but know that it is a bit late (and it …

Supporting Left-handed Children's Writing Skills

Hello, I'm an Early Years Practitioner in a playgroup. I'm intersted in finding ways to support a let-handed child develop her writing skills. She can already write her name clearly but I was wondering if there was a particular way to support left-handed children in their writing skills. Do we continue to let her form letter in her own natural, comfortable way or do we encourage her to form the letters in the way right-handed people do? I will welcome any suggestions. Pixieboots.

Someone I know has a child with SEN starting in a pre-school class soon. She has been told that no adjustments will be made for her child because they don't have time and another child has higher needs. She doesn't have a great choice of settings so she needs some advice as to how to get them to meet her child's needs. She may need to get an advisor or other professional to intervene. I don't know the Notts system but I have her email address if anyone is willing to give her some advice. She's very worried and upset and doesn't know where to turn next. Please PM me if you think you could give her any useful advice or contacts and I will send you more deta…

This thought was inspired by another thread and experiences I have had working in group settings. I've come across practitioners some, but not all, with long term experience of working in settings, who have their way of doing things and their views of children's behaviour, and they firmly believe that theirs are the only valid views. Some of these opinions are quite worrying, such as; We know the children better than the parents. Children should behave well at their default setting and if they don't we use sanctions. Children only need comfort objects to sleep. Any child who is not crying real tears is attention seeking and is actually fine. …

Just wondering if anyone has a form for sharing information with parents (not like a major incident i.e. biting), but for sharing information on issues relating to something less serious)...sorry not explaining myself very well!!...it's been a long day! If for example, few concerns over coming to the setting in wet trainers (smelling of urine). Currently get staff member to speak to parent and write down and sign/date on a sheet and keep in folder but need something more formal, but not as formal as a 'safeguarding concern' record sheet...hope you know what i mean now!
