Hi everyone, I'm hoping that some of you lovely people out there will be able to give me some advice about my provision and practice. I'm feeling a bit miserable about things at work at the moment. I've been teaching early years for 8 years now and feel that I have a fairly good understanding of how it should all work but can't help feeling that things are just not quite right in my class. The staff and anyone who comes in, including my head, tell me what a good job I'm doing but I still feel like I've not got it running as well as it could. Sorry, I'm probably making no sense Firstly, I find that we spend the morning reminding children to pick things up off the flo…

Hi I always feel a bit nervous about posting about this topic! I would like to make some kind of list or some info to give to parents to encourage them to support their child's pre writing skills before getting them to write their name. We try our hardest to encourage parents that children do not have to be writing their name before going to school and inform them of the things we do in the setting. Is there a publication I could refer too? or ideas that anyone has. Also for me in the setting some children are at the stage when they want to write their name and are capable in doing so. How can I encourage this further? I would just like some inspirat…

I wonder if I could ask for help. The following scenario has been suggested to me. Could you tell me whether you think it includes child-initiated activity/adult-led or adult-directed? Or all three? I'm wondering because a question has been raised about the CI/AL/AD balance in my class and I wonder if I have the interpretations of what each term means correct for myself. Obviously if I don't it has a fairly major impact on what I think the balance is in my room?! Reception children go with a TA to set up and use a shop. They are choosing the things to sell and are making them, they make price labels and pay for them. When they've had enough they pack the activ…

I had one of those 'warm fuzzy moments' today................. a little one who has spent several weeks screaming at us on arrival arrived today with a big warm smile, settled in very quickly and, at snack time, turned round to me with a smile that would melt solid iron bars, then said ' I love you' to me. I said 'thankyou x, that's a really lovely thing to know'......and he said 'I do, I really love you'.........it works this childcare thing, doesn't it? After all the tears, all the screaming and ranting....well, it's just lovely!

Support Staff Help

Hi, I have recently started in a new role as a Reception Teacher. I love my new role, but am finding difficulty with a specific team member who I do not feel is pulling their weight in the classroom. Confidential papers and children's work are left lying around at the end of the day and daily work set is rarely completed and again left lying around for me to move. Tasks that other TAs complete in a matter on hours have been known to take a matter of weeks. I have had several words with this person, offered gentle reminders about expectations and support, but I feel this will be an ongoing matter. I wondered wheteher anyone had some advice? Do I need to set up an action …

Hi I have for the first time in my class 4 EAL children and want to make some simple assessments to find out what basic words they know and/or understand as all sets of parents speak very little English, so just want to make sure Im supporting them best I can while I wait (what seems like forever) for support from outside agencies. I just wondered if anyone knows where I can get hold of some simple everyday pictures e.g. chair, coat etc, it not I'll just make themself. Any help would be great! Thanks xx

We're a pre-school with our core hours from 9-12.00 and 12.00- 3pm with lunch part of the afternoon session. We also offer extended day care from 8-9 am and 3-4 pm (or 5 pm subject to demand). Previously we used to finish at 3.30 pm. Children generally finish their lunch between 12.30 and 1 pm. We are then rushing at the end of the session to give them a snack at 2.30 officially but in practice at about 2.40 pm just before they go home but I am wondering if we need to offer them a snack then. I am wondering whether we should just provide the children at after school club with a snack at 3.15? What do others do?

HI, A while ago i saw (or maybe i dreamt it!) some small drawstring bags they were only about 15 x 15 cm and they had a letter of the alphabet on each bag. the intention was that you filled the bag with things that began with that letter for example bag A would have Apple, Ant, Aeroplane, Antler etc and so forth you then used it with the children to work on letters and sounds. has anyone seen anything like this? thanks Dawn

Hi everyone, Happy New Year to you all Your thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. I have previously run parent workshops focusing on aspects of interacting with your child, active learning, communication etc. which I have run during the evening and only attracted a few parents. However, I have secured a room at the local surestart centre to run these during the day (when children are attending pre-school, so no worries over childcare...that's my idea anyway!). Just wondered if anyone has ideas for marketing it to parents, think the 'parent workshop' bit is off putting, need something like 'chat and chill' rather than giving them the idea of working!
