Settling In

We have a 3 year old boy who started with us back in March. At the time, he was only 2 and had never been separated from mum. The family are from Thailand, and English is very limited, although we can understand now a few words he says. Mum is trying very hard to help us with translations and we do feel like we are getting somewhere with this now. The family went on holiday to Thailand and we're away for three months. They have recently returned to pre-school. The child has since turned 3 and is accessing 12 out of his 15 hours funding. The trouble is we cannot separate him and mum at all. Initially we thought it was Mum's own anxieties about leaving him. The …

Yellow Door have just emailed me their latest newsletter and are offering a free download demonstrating how the letter sounds should.. well sound. I'd be interested to see how useful people think it is in terms of reinforcing the correct way to produce the sounds. You can find it here.

In our "sticky" and craft area, we have a trolley that has three shelves for the children to access resources from. We have different kinds/types of paper and card, foil, masking tape, glue and spreaders, crayons of different kinds, hole punches, wool, catalogues, scissors, ribbon, pasta, coloured matchsticks and lolly sticks, scraps of material, cotton wool balls, boxes (junk modelling) - other things as well but can't remember. The idea is that the children can just go and make whatever they want to. The problem is that I think it's a bit boring. Quite a while ago we used to have different "bits and pieces" that could be glued to make things - from the Alchemist - but…

Schema Boxes?
by Guest- 19 replies

Hi all, I'm currently studying for EYPS and am looking at schemas for my toddler task. I have produced a leaflet on schemas for staff/parents, and have done a little staff training so that staff can recognise children's schemas. I have introduced a section on schemas and learning dispositions into our parent evening child summative assessments to enable parents to let us know about their childs current schemas and for us to let them know. I was thinking of reorganising our heuristic play boxes so that they reflect a few different (more popular) schemas - my thinking behind it, is when we see a child with a more popular schema then we can quickly access the resour…

Evaluating Plans
by Guest- 1 reply

Hi, in my setting we have recently changed our way of planning, from using 1/2 termly topics to Rhythm of the Year. We are still trying to get to grips with it and have introduced a separate key group time at each session, based on the planning and individual children's interests. From the key group activities, practitioners are required to evaluate the activity for their key children, to help plan next steps etc. I am not sure if an evaluation of continuous provision should be completed alongside this and would like to know how other settings complete evaluations of individual and group provision. Do any of you have an uncompleted form that you use that I cou…

I have a question - does anyone have any suggestions for helping a left-hander to put finger spaces in their writing? He is trying to put his right index finger after a word then of course is trying to reach over it with his left hand to write the next word. He's contorting himself and with writing not being his strong point anyway I don't want to make it worse. I must have taught left-handers before but either they were that amazing bunch of children who just know how to put a space in or I've completely forgotten what I did with them! I'm not sure that any sort of 'finger prop' would work because the same twisting round himself problem would happen as he tried …

Hi all, I am a little obsessed with having everything clearly labelled in our environment but find the task of making, printing, laminating, cutting out and sticking on soooooo time consuming so I went for a little wander around Staples for some inspiration of how to make this a quicker job. I was originally thinking about buying large self-adhesive labels but then found self-printing BUSINESS CARDS - just the right size to fit a small photo and writing on and will be quick and easy to print and stick on - no cutting out or need to laminate (apart from those for the outdoor area) and a bit more substantial than self-adhesive labels.
