I don't know whether I'm posting this in the right place so apologies if not. I have been working really hard this year on encouraging my children to express themselves in their own way when it comes to making pictures. It worked really well for Mothers' Day and Easter cards. For the former I put a jug of daffodils on the table, provided loads of different materials and let them make their own pictures which we then mounted on to card. For Easter, we talked about what symbols, signs and pictures reminded us of Easter, put out lots of resources and left them to it - the results were great. I was really proud of them (and of myself for being able to let go !) …

Had an e mail from a parent this morning who will be a new starter in Sept. gist of it is: Drove past this morning and saw some planks of wood outside - I know my little boy will see these as a prime play thing - will these be removed! I have that sinking feeling that the education of parents regarding the benefits of outdoor play may be one which will "do me in" one day.

We have had our just funded children all day this year for the first time (we have always just had last year children stay all day) dont get me wrong we have adapted but omg how it has changed the whole dynamics of the group! Staff find themselves most of the session either changing nappies or consoling extremely tired children who really cant understand why mummy hasnt picked them up yet!! We even have some on extended hours and staff report where as the older will happily sit and chat and play a board game or go to the library or shops to buy next days snack these poor loves dont want that! The afternoons for our older children were always alot more structured with…

Outside Storage/playhouse

We have just received 2 grants - 1 for £200 and one for £1000. We put in a quote that came to £1800 mainly for a outside playhouse, 6 rideons, waterproof cushions, target throwing net, equipment trolley. Now we have the money we need to decide what to buy! We are thinking of the playhouse and rideons. We would like the playhouse as it would mean shelter on wet and sunny days so we thought a small one would do. We would also like rideons as we dont have any at present and therefore could provide a bit of choice. We could store them in the playhouse but then if we only want the rideons out on certain days that would mean we cannot use the playhouse. What do you think …

Hi Can I ask whether you have real photographs or your setting or use widgets for your visual timeline? Can anyone suggest a theorist or piece of research discussing the advantages/disadvantages? Thanks

I'd like to find out people's views on this please as a nursery near us got outstanding recently and it was mentioned in the report about a time out area. I'm thinking of getting a beanbag or something similar to use for time out after bad behaviour but then I thought if we called it a reflection area children could go and sit there if they are cross/sad/scared etc so a member of staff could go to them to talk BUT that could then send mixed messages if a child was asked to sit there because they had used unacceptable behaviour. Another issue I'm not sure about is whether the beanbag/chair stays available all the time or whether it is kept out of the play area so i…

Jigsaw Puzzle And Threading Area

We have a 3 shelf bookshelf and putting say six jigsaws along one shelf looks a bit bare. We have been asked to ensure we have a wide variety available - peg, 4, 6, 9 and 12 piece and perhaps a bit more and they must reflect everyday scenarios children would be familiar with as well as multicultural, ethnic and feelings types. What do you have in yours, what do you use for display and how is it displayed. Also we have our threading and peg boards in the same area but these are not being used by the children - can you tell me what you have in your threading area please. Thanks.

Hiya guys, I'm currently on a temporary contract at my school and have applied for a permenent position. The job is for the class I am currently teaching (mixed foundationstage and year one). I've been invited for an interview and for one part of the interview I must read a story and carry out an activity with the class. When I originally applied for the temporary position I was asked to do the same task - I read Peace at Last by Jill Murphy and then carried out a music activity in which the children had to pick instruments to match the different sounds throughout the story. I need some ideas for a book that will make the children go WOW and has a clear link to an ac…
