I have a child (4 years old) with a seriously ill sibling and wondered if you could recommend any appropriate books on the theme of serious illness and bereavement. Also could you tell me the names of some support groups that I could suggest to the family? many thanks

Book Display

Looking for some inspiration. We use a kinder box with 4 sections in it and it is on wheels which can be pushed into a wall or in the centre of the area. We also have a little display stand with a lip on the front that sits on the window sill and radiator cover close to this area where we can place a few books. However we are finding that children will rarely venture into this area, pick up a book and read for themselves - we do include a time towards the end of our daily session and encourage the children to choose their own books, either flick through it themselves or ask an adult to read to them. I just wonder if we should change our display system or do something …

Writing

Hi all, Does the EYFS say that we can not use work sheets with preschool children to help them to learn to write. I know that the EYFS continues until the end of reception. We try to encourage children to write their names on their own paintings etc, but we always do it for them. I would hate to use something that is not allowed by ofsted. Dorinda

Hi all I am starting a topic on mini-beasts and would like to develop plenty of movement opportunities for my children in nursery. My question is can any kind people recommend a site that I could use to download music from? Which sites do people tend to use when including music in daily activities or as part of continuous provision. Thanks

Playgroup Rules

How do you explain simple playgroup rules to young children? Some of our children just don't seem to get it and we know it is a case of re emphasising constantly but it wears us down at times. We were sort of thinking of getting some pictures to demonstrate "good practice at playgroup" Things like walking not running, asking for help when it is needed (ie putting in zip parts of a coat to pull it up), listening to adult and obeying what they say (!!), putting on aprons and role play clothes by themselves but also asking for help when they cannot manage this. We had one little boy who went into the bathroom today and shouted at the top of his voice "Get out of my wa…

I'm planning to make signs for the different areas in my classroom and outdoor space so that it is very obvious to any passing parent/inspector that I'm making provision for all 6 areas of learning. I was thinking of giving the areas different names like 'The Gallery' for our art/making/crafty area. I'm not sure though - do you think it would obscure the purpose of the different spaces rather than making it clearer? If any of you do have 'different' names what do you use?

Hello, I'm planning to have something of a blitz on our outdoor provision/learning environment next term and hopefully increase our use of what is a lovely, green outdoor space with lots of unrealised potential. One of my issues with using it is set up (and subsequent tidy up). Generally speaking there is just me to set up, I'm already in at 7 in the morning (and can't get in earlier or I probably would be!) and after school there are always meetings, catch ups and 101 other jobs to do. I tend to start with setting up the indoor area as that is the first seen and first used space and rarely get around to the outdoors. So... I'm not going to be defeated, I'm try…

Hi Not sure this is the right place Some if the children are very interested in frog spawn (few have it in ponds in gardens etc) we though it would be a good idea to have some in the setting. Can anyone recommend the best environment for it and also what we need to feed it? Many thanks
