Hi This may seem an odd query but here goes anyway. One of our children (4 year old) said to me recently that she sometimes found it difficult to stop me (when she wanted to make something). I had a chat with her and came up with ways she could gain my attention, such as holding my hand and saying 'can you help me'. She used this strategy to good effect. However, it got me wondering if there could be a better way for children to gain adults' attention when they really need them to listen to them, especially if the child was not so able to articulate their needs. Do you have any strategies you use in your setting - such as a visual sign, maybe?

Hi all, Hope first day back after half term wasn't too stressfull. We are in the process of changing our provision to provide more continuious provision and are begining to develop our creative area and have come across the 'scissors' debate!! I can see the value of having the scissors out all of the time but other colleagues are against it. Their feelings are that as the children will be unsupervised they are worried about injuries and hair etc being cut. The main concerns seem to be what the parent's response will be to this. A parent will be livid if hair is snipped off and you cant just tell them 'Hair grows back!. What do you feel about it all? How did yo…

I think we probably all have children who are absent from pre-school with no notification and then turn up the next day or a couple of days later with parents saying "he/she wasn't in because ...". We also have parents who are really good at phoning to let us know their child won't be in for whatever reason. However, I wonder what you all do if a child is suddenly not in, no message received and the abscence continues - how long do you wait before contacting parents, if no response then what?? We have a child who attends 5 days and attendance has been really good. The odd day off but back the next day with 'had a cough' or whatever. Then suddenly off for one day …

Hi everyone I am a nursery teacher and have 13 in the morning rising 4's and repeat the number in the afternoon. I have just been tole that my T.A. has to go out and teacher SEN children 3 mornings and 2 afternoons a week. this will leave me alone. sometimes I hve parent helpers/students but I am worried if I need to go to the loo, accident, siezure one has diabetes type 1. etc. I have been told by the HD that the staff ratio is 1:13. Do I need another quailified t.a. in my room or not? I must admit I am not happy in case god forbid anything happens. would be grateful for any advice.

Now our children are all settled in i think we could start to self register ( at least the morning group!) but i have not done this before, though i have seen a couple of examples. We have very little space...i think the front of a cupboard may be the only place available. Do any of you have any tips/ideas fab ways of diplaying etc??? any info gratefully received

As you may know I am BIG on outdoor play We have been putting paint activities outside as we've found more children access it but this last week it has been bitterly cold and though it's been marble painting (as in rolling it in a tray not the inks) specifically (so they could do it without necessarily getting painty hands so they could still wear gloves) they have been unwilling to wear them. We're bringing it in tomorrow but I wondered what others do? I thought of having nursery gloves so it doesn't matter if they get painty but wonder if it's more to do with not being able to feel as much - I always take my gloves off to do anything - even write obs
