I work in a school that has two reception classes. We are very successful in that the children acheive high scores on the foundation stage profiles due in part to coming from middle class, professional backgrounds and having strong parental support. I am concerned that our lessons are too formal, more suitable to year 1 lessons than foundation stage. When we have in school observations it is expected that the children will be given set tasks relevant to the learning objective and to be clearly able to discuss what they are learning and talk about the success criteria. Heavy going! We do 'do' child initiated but as a separate discrete session. I would like to ask o…

Does Outstanding Matter To Parents?
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi We were rated in November as oustanding in all areas As you can imagne we are over the moon that all our hard work had been recognised We thought lots more parents would want to use us BUT, we are losing three children in July for a Sept start to other settings Settings which are attached to schools rated 2 -satisfactory 1 - good When I asked the parents why, it was because, they will be going to school there, so best start them while there is a place. I dont think parents /carers mind at all the Ofsted rating as long as its above Satisfactory Because Outstanding still dosent stop the children leaving for a "school preschool" What does anyone else…

Just wanted to get some information from you all....a student was with us today and could not believe we all had cups of tea during the day...she said she has been in four nurseries and none of them allowed hot drinks in the room...am I naiive or is this normal practice for you all? We carry our drinks in in a deep tray and they are only allowed to be put on the high shelf...we always have drinks and are always careful..... I understand that it is a risk but happy staff need tea and coffee, we are in the room from 9 until 3.30 with a 20 min break... and surely most children learn this 'life lesson' at home and wherever they go ...we are careful and they need to be awa…

Could anyone let me know how many key children they work with on a day to day basis? Is it true that you cannot have more than 8 or 4 key children working with you at any one time (depending ages of children - adult:child ratios) even if their are other members of staff working in the room with you? I have just been sorting out key workers for new children and my manager told me not to put more than 8 in each group (3-4yrs) and 4 for the 2 yr olds. One of the staff ended up with 9 (3-4 yr old) children on one day. I mentioned the fact that she wouldn't necessarily be working with the 9 children at the same time, even if they were all in on the same day but she said Ofst…

This a.m at playgroup we tipped compost into our sensory tray and there was a lump of sharp clear glass in it. We then tipped out the whole bag of compost and found another piece of brown bottle glass in the compost. We could only assume the glass must have been in the compost already. Has anyone else had this happen?

Hi all, We have two EAL children in my setting (both with same language). This is the first time any of our children have had EAL and so experience is limited! I've read up as much detail as I can find on supporting these children and would like to add labels, learn songs, common words, use their home name in addition to english name (which looks very different). But my problem is that the parents are not receptive to my proposals, both just say that they are here to speak and learn English and don't want any sign of their home language. One parent was not impressed with the dual language book I sourced (at great expense!) or the fact that the 2 children had…
