We are hopefully having our early years area area rebuilt (for 3 to 5 year olds) and I need some inspiration! Hope you can help - any ideas or comments would be gratefully received! What do you love about your building/provision? What areas so you think work well near each other? What would you do if you could redesign you setting? Any other ideas!! Thanks for your help.

Does anybody have any menu planning ideas for snack you wouldn't mind sharing? I'd like to draw up a list of ideas to make our Friday planning easier as we have so much else to discuss and by the time we get to thinking about what to buy for snack we all struggle to come up with ideas. Here are a couple of ideas we have used recently to whet your appetite!! Ritz crackers spread with cream cheese (children do this), topped with a slice of apple and clementine and topped with another cracker - delicious!! Tinned spagetti with dinosaur toast.

Hi. We have a child with a nut allergy and I have always had a Sainsbury Nut Free Guide but it ran out in November 09 and when I contacted them they are not going to print another as the info goes out of date too quickly. Fair enough! But, when you go online to get their nut free lists its not active at the moment. I have found the other major supermarkets utterly rubbish so am thinking I will stick to the basics from Sainsbury that are in the only-just-out-of-date book. What are others of you with children with nut allergies going to do?

Help With Boys And Guns! 1 2
by Guest Beryl- 42 replies

We have a group of boys in our pre-school who love to make guns with whatever type of construction is out. They then rush about pretending to shoot each other for the rest of the free choice play part of the session. I find this very hard to deal with as we supposedly have a "no making guns or playing guns etc" rule but it is not strongly enforced. Has anyone else had the same problem? If so, how did you deal with it?? Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

I got my December edition of FirstBite today, and see that the DCSF is researching how practitioners can promote wider parental participation. They are looking for people who work with children between birth and 19 years old to submit their ideas, and specific information about what has worked well within their settings. Alternatively, if you have ideas about why certain approaches haven't been successful in engaging parents, they'd like to hear that too. There's no consultation document, they're just asking for people to email their ideas and experiences. Sounds like a good idea to shape policy, I think. Here's the link to the page on Teachernet, and the ad…

For the past few weeks our setting has been preparing for Christmas, as I'm sure most of us are! so circle time is now dominated by learning songs for the Christmas concert. We have a 3 yr old whose parents do not want him to participate in any Christmas related activity due to their religious beliefs, and I completely respect and understand this. So whilst the others are learning the Christmas songs, one of the staff members accompanies the child at the computer or reads with him. This worked well to start with, but for the past few days as soon as he sees the chairs being arranged for circle time he sits down and refuses to move. We have tried to do the singing at …

Hi, Does anyone use these?. We have just got some but they came without instructions. After spending half-an hour trying to find where the batteries go I was told by a helpful dad at pre-school that perhaps you charge them up on your computer. Duuuuh! I am now charging, it's 'flashing' but I don't know how long I need to charge it for. I have mangaged to record myself singing the Eastenders theme tune and play it back. Anyone know what the 'snowflake' button means? i am hopeless without an instruction manual...

hello all, i have a child that has epilepsy and has regular seizures many resulting in having to administer medication and calling an ambulance, this forutnately hasn't happened yet but it's only a matter of time! i was wondering if, like the fire service anyone has been able to get the ambulance service to visit their setting i have phoned the local headquarters and not had much luck! i just wanted to invite them in to give the children some idea of what to expect before the event ie. their uniforms and strangers coming into the setting with all their equipment etc etc. and to just be able to put them at ease, we have done lots of role play and have a persona doll who a…
