We are a school Nursery running 2 x 2.5 hour sessions a day and I am currently planning for next year's extended hours. I would really like to offer flexible provision to give parents different options, but am still very anxious about many issues including planning, staffing, timetabling, etc. I want to send out a questionnaire to our current parents giving different options to see if flexible provision is what parents want. I'm looking at offering either 5 half days of 3 hours or 2 full days and a half day. However, the option of offering 2.5 days, ie Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (AM) or Wednesday (PM), Thursday, Friday ends up as too many hours. eg Mon…

Schemas

Hi I have been reading about schemas as I have noted a few of the children have 'obvious' schemas. I would like to use these in my planning for activities for those children. Just wondered what your thoughts on schemas are, how do they link into your planning and what sort of activities you plan. Thanks, in advance!

feeling rather wobbly tonight after a great half term at my new school, everything going ok and then in the last hour a child slips on my lovely new bricks and splits her head open. I feel so guilty as I wasn't stanbding there at the time but trying to sort out 2 other children who had just had a punch up. All the staff were in the room and I was just about to go over to the bricks. Now it's all got to be reassessed and I'm so worried that I will be deemed incompetant. In my last observation my mentor said about H & S with the bricks, they are the big blocks from community playthings, and since then I have let the children play withy them while I sat with them. They k…

Hi We have a parent who has a 2 year, 9 month old child who is tracing letters. Could somebody point me in the direction of theory regarding good practice when developing writing skills? Cannot access my laptop at the moment so somewhat bereft, as it has so much information on it. I have key files copied but not all of them. Thanks

We're reading Pumpkin Soup lots at the moment and I wanted to think a bit more about working together, teamwork and cooperation. I wondered if anyone had any good ideas for games that need children to work together, especially games that would make good use of a large space like the hall - maybe parachute games?

A member of staff has been asked by her key child's mother that her daughter be taught 'cursive' letters to write her name as this is the system they use at the school she will be attending next sept. The mum suggested she bring in her older child's work book to show how the letters should be formed, starting on the line and finishing on the line! Do you think this is acceptable (remembering individual learning of course) or if we do this for one parent, will we all have to learn cursive, jolly phonics, letterland, phonics etc etc. to please every parent too? Any advise would be appreciated thank you dottyp

C.f.s Areas ?

I have a member of staff who is doing the DPP and this week she went on a visit to a children's centre, which she has been raving about. It sounds absolutely fantastic. The manager of the centre asked if they had all got their C.F.S. areas set up because ofsted are really keen on them. I have not heard of them and my EYFSA hasn't mentioned them so I wondered if anyone else knew about them. My staff member cannot remember what the letters stand for but she thinks that it is to do with having a quiet area for the children to sit and reflect or talk. Just wondering where I am going to set up this new area if it has to be done! Thanks, Mary

Seal Materials

Does anyone know what age group the Seal materials are aimed at? I have just received the revised materials for EYFS but my school currently use the older version which I just don't think are right for Nursery children. I have been asked to get the children to make a specific contribution to a whole school display which appears to be related to the whole school assemblied which Nursery don't attend so they don't actually make sense. Any ideas? Feel a bit confused by this. Thanks
