Intake Children Under Aged 2?
by Guest- 4 replies

Does anyone know if you can have under 2's at a pre-school (if you are able to comply with a 1:3 ratio) I can't find any info about this on google and I haven't personally heard of it. We are getting so many parents of children who are not yet 2 but constantly enquiring about their place on the waiting list saying 'he's just soooo ready!' They don't want a nursery because it is not childcare the parent needs and they feel they have exhausted the local toddler groups etc and when their child is of age it is our setting they have chosen... hmmm...

I Need To Re-do My Routine!
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi everyone. I am currently undergoing a re-structure at my sessional nursery. I am planning to overhaul our daily routine and was hoping for some suggestions as to what really works. Currently, we have 24 children in a session. They all arrive at the same time and leave at the same time, therefore we have a formal registration before free play. We stop for a group story, then we have a sit-down snacktime to encourage socialising and independence (and also because a rolling snack bar would affect our staff ratio and physical space within an already small setting). We either have more free play or outdoor play after snacks, then get together for the last 10 minutes or so…

Top Tips For Circle Time

Hi everyone. I am currently undergoing a re-structure of our daily routine at my pre-school. I would love to introduce a regular circle time session but have come up against a few problems that I hope you can help me with. We are a sessional nursery, running for 3 hours, within a village hall. Our sessions have 24 children in them every day. My main concerns are a) how often to run a circle time (daily, weekly etc.), b) how many children should participate at any given time (bearing in mind we have the possibility of splitting the group into 12 and 12 (indoors and outdoors) but no other space to put them in) and c) what time during the session a circle time seem…

Thing is, there is so much out there and i need to have an order in before the summer hols! On top of everything else!! Any suggestions of where's best to get them from would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

by Guest- 6 replies

I have a child in my class who is from Somalia. She is growing in confidence and it is clear there is quite a lot of intellect (for our school) hiding behind a huge physical disability and a lack of confidence. I was wondering if anyone knew of any basic resources that are in Somalian or a how to speak basic Somali so I can try and say some words to her in somali as I think she will appreciate it. Thanks

The children have moved the topic onto sea animals. My question is, is it safe for the children to touch fish, squid etc from the fishmongers Obviously they wash their hands afterwards. We were going to place them in the water tray. I have already tried a google search and tried HSE website, can't find anything though Thank you Angie

Hi everybody We currently spend the last 20 minutes-ish- of each session with all the children together-about 26- doing what we call our activity session. But I am bored with what we do and wondered if anybody had any activities that they have found the children enjoyed-ours are aged between 2 years 9 months and 4. The activities at present are: parachute games mini-gym-trampoline, tunnels, balancing equipment etc. band-with made or bought instruments beanbags, balls, hoops etc. Sticky Kids Occasionally dance-but not got a great many ideas for this Rhythm sticks Action songs and rhymes It does tend to be a more physical type of session and I am feeling very …

Hi all, I'm hoping you can offer me some help - I'm preparing for an interview in a preschool next week which I'm thrilled about, I work in a nursery at the moment and love working with the older children, so I'm trying to move into a preschool setting. I'm hoping that some of you may have worked in both types of settings and can offer me some insight into the practical differences between the two types of settings. I'm aware of the basics - namely the age range, it's sessional not full days, and tends to be more structured than nurseries... I'd be really interested in hearing any real life comparisons you can make between nurseries and pre-schools. Thanks so much…

Committee Have Asked Us To Work With Minimum Staff

Yesterday all the staff were asked to go to a meeting with the chair and treasurer. We were not told what the meeting was about. At the moment they are updating our contracts and had asked for what days and times we worked. For some sessions we use a rota so that we don't always work the same hours each week. For example on one week I might work all day monday, thursday and friday morning, yet the next week I could be working monday morning, weds morning, all day thursday and friday morning. I know, it's complicated but we know what is going on. Anyway for the last 18 years or so we have worked to a ratio of 1:5, which is good with all the paperwork needed. We have 20 ch…
