What Is Food For?
by Guest- 5 replies

It seems to me that there is a question to be asked as to whether it is appropriate to use foods as play materials when foodstuffs are a precious resource. There are unnacceptably high numbers of children and families living in poverty. We need to think carefully about the messages we convey to children about what food is for. Children will touch and learn about the qualities of the food they eat during mealtimes and cooking activities. The concern I wish to raise is the use of food materials purely for the purpose of play or learning activities, thus rendering the food inedible. If we don't tackle this issue by using food for its intended purpose then we expose ourselves…

Requirements For Outdoor Provision
by Guest- 18 replies

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum so hope I am posting this question in the right place! I am leading a staff meeting on Monday entitled 'understanding foundation stage' for my colleagues. one of the questions posted in the box was 'is being outdoors a legal requirement'? All I know is that being outdoors is great and children should have free flow access to outdoor provision. I thought 50% of the time should be outdoors but have no idea where I have plucked that figure from! Does anyone know what the guidance / regulations / legal requirements are for being outdoors? thank you, Kathryn

Hi there, we are starting up a toddler group in our brand new pre-school (on school premises)which will have two paid leaders to run it and will be inviting in hairdressers (for kids), baby signer, health visitor(booked in advance), etc, etc as well as guest speakers. Anyone who will do it for free, but may want to ask for donations from the parents. We will provide music time, crafts, snacks/drinks for adults and children and will have access to our new outdoor area as well. In order for us to cover costs, I suggested £3.00 per two child family/group with 50p per extra child that attends, however, some feel that this is not enough, whilst others think it sh…
