Planning Adult-led Activities In A Child-initiated Environment
by Guest Wolfie- 17 replies

As some of you may know, last week we abandoned topics in our room for 2-5 year olds in favour of observing the children and planning activities and resources based on their interests. We are at an incredibly early stage with this and at the moment, the satff are getting grips with the different areas that we've created in the room and observing the children, their learning, development and interests, in a lot more detail than before. At the moment, we have no planned adult-led activities during the children's "free choice" time - this is something that I want to introduce very gradually once all the staff have got to grips with what we're doing at the moment. But I…

How Do I Get The Balance Right?
by Guest- 6 replies

Hi there I wonder if anyone could give me some really useful advice regarding a very tricky issue which we have in my setting at the moment? In our small pre-school ,struggling with very low numbers at the moment, we have one child (a very active boy) fast approaching 4 and the majority of the other children are 2 and a half and a few very young 3 year olds. The eldest child is struggling to maintain himself, really missing all the children who left last term and not really finding anyone else to buddy up with. He is a real boys boy and although liking the company of the smallest children he is obviously finding it hard work. His speech is way in advance of th…

Taking The Plunge With Motivational Planning!
by Guest Wolfie- 22 replies

For a couple of months now I've been working on reorganising the learning environment in the room for 2-5 year olds at our nursery. When I started this job, there was no clear direction or planning in the room, no teamwork amongst the staff and the room was very unorganised and "haphazard" for want of a better word. To cut a VERY long story short, we are now at the point where, next Saturday, we are going in to completely reorganise the room and create a much more effective and stimulating environment for the children, creating distinct bays/workshop areas that roughly coincide with the areas of learning in the EYFS. This is a HUGE step forward and I know that I nee…

Danish Pre-schools

I've been at a meeting this afternoon at which a colleague shared information and photos about a study trip she'd been on last week to Denmark, to look at practices in pre-schools and kindergartens over there...I want a job over there!! The pictures of the outdoor environments and forest schools that the children have access to were so inspiring. What struck me most was the real freedom that the children have to explore resources and be creative - and also the completely different approach that the practitioners have to allowing the children to take and manage risks in their play. There were some photos of a barn, absolutely full of hay bales of different sizes and…

Maybe I am having a realy thick moment but thought I would share on here in the hope that someone might be able to enlighten me! My Head has asked me to support my EAL's by taking a picture of classroom objects adding a label and sticking it on the item. Surely if I am asking the child to sit on the chair it is just as easy to point to the chair as it is to point to the picture of the chair on the chair ( if you see what I mean). I could understand more if I was holding the picture and then asked so they could match the picture to the object. The three and four year olds are unable to read the label and althought I fully understand the need for a literacy rich environmen…

Learning Bays
by Guest Wolfie- 3 replies

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good article about dividing a room up into various workshops/learning bays, e.g. creative, investigating and exploring, mathematical? I'm in the middle of helping the staff in the 2-5s room rearrange the room in this way and would like to share some pictures and ideas from other settings to get across my ideas more effectively. I've got several books with chapters on the different areas but want something a bit more concise and maybe with more pictures. My best resource so far is the Lewisham Place to Learn publication but I want something "smaller" if possible! Any ideas?

I have a lovely glass window which is asking to be painted on, but I want to be able to clean it off easily at some point - do I need special paint or can I add something to the paint we have already. Have you tried this?
