Hi I hope someone can help. I have been reading the EYFS today, been through CD rom, etc.... Now i'm more confused than ever. Basically we take children from the age of 2, so they are with us for 2 and a half / 3 years. We have 32 new 2 year olds starting with us during september and i'm not sure what to do about their observations and record keping, do i cross reference to the birth to 3 or try and come up with something for the EYFS, trouble is i will have to alter them come sept 08 if i use the birth to 3. Just not sure what to put in place if i use the EYFS. Our training is not coming out till march next year. What is every body else doing?

Not sure if I'm in the right place, but here goes. One of the newsletters I subscibe to sent me this, this morning, and I wondered what you might make of it. As always, it just goes to show there is nothing new in this world... Maz Dorothy Wiseman Gross, a Brooklyn College early childhood professor, in an article in 1967 entitled “Teachers of Young Children Need Basic Inner Qualities,” said that "while universities create extensive teacher preparation courses of study, “the heart of the matter — the inner qualities needed for working effectively with young children — has been strangely overlooked.” The five “inner qualities” Professor Gross describes are: …

Is there anyone out there who is engaged in looking at the issue of the anticipated flexible 15 hour provision in a maintained nursery class, i.e raising it from a usual current half day session of 2 1/2 hours a day= 12 and a half hours a week. Has anyone looked at how to provide the extra 2 and a half hours a week and if so how would you manage the staff hours etc within a primary school framework. This is in its infancy, my LA is in the pilot for it this year so I'm hoping people won't get alarmed and think this is something they've missed or have to do something about right now, but it will be required to be in place .(It's all in the childcare act 2006/every child mat…

Positive Behaviour Management

As a staff team we need a refresher on positive behaviour management. I have done a course or two but not for some time and would like to have a staff meeting based on this subject. Do you guys out there have any titbits which would help me pull together a simple but effective model for our meeting? We try to say things like 'always walk' rather than 'don't run' We emphasise the good things we see and hear and try to play down the negative We try to greet each child individually each day and give them our attention or play alongside them at least once a day We try and build self-esteem by using group times to 'big-up' individual children's achievements What else…

Laerning Journeys

Hi, I don't know whether this is in the right place, but I am sure someone will move it if not. Does anyone use the Learning Journey format similar to that shown on the new govt. EYFS web pages? If so where do you start? Is it a book/loose leaf file? How do you arrange your pages? Is there a photo on each one? Who gets the Learning Journey at the end of the child's time with you? Is it the Parents or the new Provider? Would love to find out more about this, but seem to have come to a standstill - nothing much on the web. Thanks

Hi, Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but here goes..... It's a bit of a long story but hopefully not too confusing! I run a small rural pre school and work in partnership with the village school. The term before the children start at the school full-time they start doing mornings only, starting at two a week slowly building up to 5 mornings by the last week of term. The children come to pre-school for the mornings they're not at school. The class they're in at school has reception, yr1 and yr2 in one room, with an outside area. The school decides if the children 'are not ready' for more mornings although up to now this has never occurred …

Problem With Roomsharing

I'm just going to run this by you and see if anyone has any ideas. Basically we are a small village playgroup and we run in a purpose built (for us) room which is on the school site. We moved into the room in 2000 and for 4 years we were happy but then school informed us that an out of school club would be using the room as well. We also run a Tots group in there as well so there are 3 groups trying to store equipment in a store room that was meant for one group. We work 4 mornings and 1 afternoon at the moment but want to open some extra afternoons in September. We have the room every day from 8a.m. to 2.50 p.m. Session times are 9a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 12.20p.m. to 2.…

Just wondering if you all do transition documents to give to your schhols as children start? Also someone had said that it is now expected that pre school do these? If so where could I find this info from to take back to my setting?

I'm running a parents' workshop on Small World play next week and am trying to think of a good activity that I can get them involved in as part of the session - something fun and very practical which will get them to think about ways to provide small world play for their children and what sort of learning opportunities it promotes. I've got a couple of ideas but am wondering if anyone else has any....?
