i would welcome some opinions and and suggestions about this. I run a Pre-School setting As part of NVQ 2, two of my staff have been asked to do an activity (one each) about the dangers of talking to strangers. I am not comfortable with this and neither are they. We follow ELGS about saftey, in general ie. staying with mum, not running off, but I feel it would be very easy to frighten these young children. Also I think it would be something we would have to discuss with parents. Your comments would be very welcome Glen

Not sure where to post this but felt sure someone would have a suggestion or two. Some of our parents are having a problems with their rising five children who are going to School in September, big fish in a small pond flexing their muscles a bit, ready to fly the nest etc. We get a bit of it at Pre-school too. Is anybody else experiencing this and do you have any suggestions for coping with it? My initial thought is to give the children more responsibility. I know from my own children that this happens when they leave first school, middle school etc. Any ideas? Deb

Hello, I know i'm not a nursery or school but hope you might be able to enlighten me. I work at a committee run holiday club. At our meeting on Thurs i was told that we are supposed to have 5 members on our committee. We currently have 2!! Does anyone know how long a provision can run with less members than they are supposed to have? I was told that unless we don't get some parents on the committee soon we will have to close, and i don't want to do that. Also, any fantastic ideas for recruiting parents onto a committee would be great!! laura x

I'd love some ideas/help on home visits. Before children start with us in Reception we usually do visits to feeder nurseries, have an open meeting for parents with presentation and visit round school and our rooms/outdoor area, then we finish off with 2 afternoons for the new children to visit us for play and a story. I have been encouraged to find out about and consider home visits for next year. One person I spoke to said they offer them as an option and carry them out over the first few days of the term. What do other people do? My main questions are: What is the take up rate like usually? How long do you spend at the child's home? Do you go with your LS…

I have been on a course today about planning and was wondering if anyone out there could enlighten me as to what is really expected of us and how you plan.? our long term plan consists of our topics, any special event or visits and also the aspects we intend to cover. ( we know which aspects as we brain stormed the topics and used some of the ideas to use as our adult led activities) medium term is our adult led activities for the half term short term consits of our daily session plans along with the activity plans. What do you think?

Hi I am trying to make a list of books that offer postive images of children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, I really feel that there are far too few books that have pictures of children from non white backgrounds. Classic example "Handas surprise" african child, living in mud hut... dosnt bear any resembles to my children who are of black heritage and live in the middle of a city. When it comes to Asian, Indian or Pakistan children there seems even fewer books. I am really looking for good everyday stories that have pictures of children of ALL backgrounds, not necessary books on Divali etc I really feel it is important to have books that our childre…

Hi, Over the last few weeks we have been doing a sponsored Mini trampoline jump at preschool. The children were asked to jump for as many times as they possibly could. I counted out loud to help motivate the increased number of jumps. How many Jumps do you think a 4 yr old could do? I will give my answer at the end of the week I'm curious to see how many you think it might be. Peggy

In one of my madder moments, I bought a guitar, insisting to myself that I was going to use it at school and simply couldn't do without it!!!! Having since had a variety of different guitar lessons that have attempted to teach me to play either like some aging country band or like oasis, i haven't really got very far!!! All I really want to be able to do is play things like twinkle twinkle little star and I am a greedy crocodile etc etc etc Does anyone know of anywhere that does guitar lessons specifically for teachers? I am in the london area (se)... Hope someone can help.... Cheers BB

Role Play School?
by Guest- 7 replies

Hi I am going to revamp my role play area (in a reception class) during the Easter break and need help! Whatever role play area or activity I have out, left to their own devices, 9 times out of 10 the children turn their play into 'role play schools'. We were therefore thinking about letting them 'get it out of their systems' and support and extend this play more by making the role play area into a school where they can have the resources to develop their ideas more. But I'm worried I should be broadening their horizons (not to mention their taking on the role of me as teacher and how they will portray me!). Has anyone else done this? What do you think? Any poin…
