Challenging Behaviour
by Guest- 3 replies

Hi, I am really interested in finding out about the latest ideas and theories on how to handle children's challenging behaviour. I work in a school nursery that does have a few lovable rogues that are a handful and the teacher and the school way of dealing with them is a 'report book' whereby the child's bad behaviour is noted down for the child's parent to read when they go home. I feel this is focussing on the negative while completely ignoring anything positive about the child. I also think it generally does not work, out of 4 children, 1 child has improved and no longer has a book, 2 have remained the same and 1 child's behaviour appears to be deteriorating. I use p…

What is the ratio of qualified teacher to children in reception? For september, the local primary has 1 definite teacher, 2 classroom assistants (one of whom is a newly qualified NVQ3) and a 4th staff which hasnt been decided but may well be another level 3. All staff are being called early years practitioners, and will be responsible for delivering the curriculum to a group. There is an intake of 42 which will be spilt into 4 groups. Parents are questioning me on why a level 3 can be classed as a teacher as this is how it is being promoted. One parent told me they are all early years practioners and was surprised when I said so was I. It's like the school are using long …

What Did You Learn At School?

I'm preparing for our new intake meeting with the new children's parents. MY head teacher wants to tell a story about a child who's asked what they did at school that day and the parent isn't satisfied until they are told there is a painting (if I remember rightly). I'm sure I read a story along these lines here some long time ago. No idea where to search. I tried lots of golden time threads to no avail. Any ideas or good stories, poems etc for such occasions. Thanks Was anyone else mad enough to get involved in the BT Giant Sleepover. We had one at school last night. Muggins did the night shift with a good few willing parents and 96 KS2 children. I had to le…

Hi! I am sorry I am posting this post for the 3rd time... but I am not sure where to do so since it covers different age levels. I hope you excuse me. Okak? I wanted to know your opinion based on your personal experiences. In our school the idea of working as a 'unit' from BTTM to Reception seems to be coming, not completely as a real physical unit.. but in the planning. There is the idea of using the same topic for 3 years in a row... not only on special holidays like Welcome Back to School, Harvest, Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day or Father's Day... but also in themes like: Bears, Minibeasts, The Zoo, The Sea/Under the Sea, and the seasons. My wor…

From 2 To 8 Years In One Centre
by Guest Wolverton Day Nursery- 8 replies

Hi again, My nursery is located in a building shared with a nursery class attached to a primary school. We offer wraparound care, with breakfast clubs, afterschool and playschemes for the 4 - 8 year olds attending the school - alongside our day nursery for 2 - 5year olds. Has anyone experienced having a mixed aged range like this? We find it works really well, the older children help the younger, younger children encourage patience and caring in our older children. Looking forward to hearing from everyone again. Ann

Stepping Stones?
by Guest- 8 replies

Do all of you in pre-schools use the stepping stones from the Nat'l Curriculum for your planning and assessments? Or do you use some other "checklists"? This may seem like a strange question ..... but I have my reasons! I would be very interested to hear your comments.
