Limiting Number Of Children Using Area 1 2

We've briefly discussed this in the FSunit section but I wanted to open it out and get more opinions. When I started working in our foundation Stage Unit it was the old nursery and the only limitation children had on using areas was in the house where only 5 children can play and they put a bead necklace on and in the water and painting easel where they are limited by the number of aprons. Our LEA adviser helped us make changes to turn the building into a FSunit and was very keen on this system. I'd always known this system but hadn't been really srict about it-just had signs-eg 4 people can play here because that's all there was space for. However, that was when I ju…

Hi, just been on a first aid course and found out something non of us knew. If you need to dial for an ambulance or other emergency from a mobile phone apparently 112 gets you to the closest transmitter, 999 gets you to the closest transmitter for your network, which in the tutors experience can put a call through to a service 100 miles away. Not something I can test but thought I'd share it with you

On Your Knee

do any of you have specific policies regarding handling children who are destressed, hurt unwell or just need a cuddle? Do you lift the child on your knee and give them a cuddle or do you make the child sit next to you. What about patting the child or other physical contat like giving them a hug? We have high windows in our nursery (portakabin) and some of our younger ones want to be able to wave bye bye to mum/dad from the window. One of the nursery staff usualyy pick them them for a quick bye bye. I am wondering if this will be construed as bad practice. As a parent myself i would like to think that if my child was hurt or upset, staff would comfort my child in an app…

Creativity In The School As A Whole

Hello - not sure where I'm going here (but its not about painting etc...) but will have a go... Recently had an inspirational educational consultant in to wk with us about how to develop our school. He said that some schools have abandoned the lit/numeracy hours (am receptn teacher in a primary school) and run their own school day according to their chdn's learning needs!! (sounds fab but little scary to me). he was encouraging us to be more creative with the curriculum we are providing and as long as we can justify why we are doing what we are doing and it is having positive effect it could be viewed as good practise. Has anyone changed their school/curriculum and bec…

Tracking

Do you track the areas that your children have visited each day/week? If so, how do you organise it and more importantly how USEFUL do you find the information and does it inform your planning? I've heard that OFSTED will expect to see tracking systems in place and am starting to panic a bit!

Early Years Unit

We are a very small primary school - 85ish on roll and our Reception intake for September 2005 is 4 children!!! As funding will not allow us to employ a teacher for these children I have to include Reception with my mixed Year 1 and 2 class. Altogether there will only be 22 children (10 Y2, 8 Y1 4 R) with one full time teacher, a part time HLTA and a part time TA. How on earth do I manage this!!!! We are looking to create an Early Years Unit and I wondered if anyone had any experience of doing this. Any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated! Rileyh

I have just discovered this new channel on: § Sky 592, § Telewest 240, § ntl 803, § KIT 70, § HomeChoice 845, and FREEVIEW 47 and last night (2am actually) recorded an hour of excellent early years stuff: § Daily Routines § Using Puppets § The Outdoor Environment Young Learners I have just watched them back and was really impressed! Thought you might like to have a look too if you have access to this. Maybe you could get a friend to record it for you if not - its really worth it! Each slot was abut 15 minutes in length and featured real settings demonstrating really good, child led, playbased practice - hooray…
