Brush Bus

We have used THE BRUSH BUS for a couple of years now. We were asked to do so by the dentist as its another way of the children getting flouride (non in our water). We have 3 different coloured buses for Nursery/reception and each child has their own brush with an animal sticker on and a corresponding place to put their brush on the bus! We started off doing it in the slot just before dinner as this was the only time we could fit it in (they are all using bathroom anyway) but then the dinner ladies heard about us doing this, thought we were daft! and offered to do it when they brought them back from lunch (although it was an issue of gettting flouride directly on thei…

Black Block Paint....
by Guest- 19 replies

In Nursery we have either an adult focussed painting activity, OR we have painting available as basic provision. We have powder paints mixed for the children, and we have a seperate space for block paints. Children enjoy painting, and often visit the area, but the only problem we have is that when the children are using the block paints, they- Tend to get black on all the other colours Dont change their water Mix all the colours up, so the paper just ends up a grey mess. I personally would like to take the black block paint away, so the children can use the other colours effectively, but I am aware that some children may want to use black, and we shouldnt be…

I am sure we are all aware of additives and their effects they may have, but one I was not aware of until today is found in bread... which many of us serve regularly to the children. E282 Calcium propionate (mould inhibitor) Found in: bread products Linked with: aggression, hyperactivity and stomach ache. this explains the behavour of one of our children, everytime he has toast at snack time. We noticed it within a week of him starting with us, and after eliminating all other food products felt that bread was the cause of his behaviour change. No one believed us, but he always has a behaviour change after eating toast. i am now off to check the bread we …

Plenaries!

How on earth do you fit them in? I know most teachers find it hard even with the very structured literacy and numeracy hours so its even harder for us with the new FS curriculum. I used to have a specific 'sit down' slot but scrapped it coz there was too much stopping and starting then our LEA advisor said we could just do one at the end of each adult focused activity. But....dare I admit it? I don't....feel really bad as I know its a case of reinforcing their learning. On the other hand if I say eg 'Now each time you write that d for dog, you will remember that it starts like a curly caterpillar' after some writing-is that a plenary? Maybe not!

I'm going to be joining the working party on "raising boys attainment" in my authority. I may or may not be the only person representing the early years. It is apparent from looking at borough wide profile results that the boys are doing less well than the girls and this continues through to KS1 etc. so, my request is: What issues do you face in relation to boys attainment, particularly CLL ? How do you plan provision to engage boys in a range of experiences they may not seem inclined to join in with e.g. using writing to communicate. What have you tried that has raised their interest/skills/knowledge/understanding and why did it work? Are there issues fa…

Tidy-up Time Trauma!
by Guest- 13 replies

Can anyone help please! I work in a Foundation Stage Unit which is quite substantial in size and during session times is free-flow play. Because of the nature of how we work there are far fewer boundaries for the children and I wonder whether this might be why at Tidy-up Time we all end up pulling our hair out!!!! The children will do anything in their power to escape from tidying up - they will literally go and hide somewhere, or just move from room to room managing to fool us all. Does anyone have any great ideas about improving this horrible time of the day???
