Toilets!

I know adult child ratios has been discussed quite a lot in the forum (I asked a question about lunchtime supervision once before but have been reading for ages now and can't find it). Anyway, we're in a bit of a dilema and wonder if anyone can help ? We have a FS Unit with just over 60 chn. The building used to be the nursery and they never had anymore than 60 chn on the premises because they were told (I think) that it was built for this many. There are 6 toilets and somebody said the ratio of toilets per child should be 1-10. Our head wants us to bring more children into the school. Staffing wise we are fine as we had to get another Reception teacher in as the n…

Multi-sensory Tent!
by Guest- 20 replies

I have just "built" a floor to ceiling tent to brighten up the end of a corridor which was wasted space and never got used by the children. Once the sari-covered curtain doors are closed it's pitch-black inside and I'm hoping to develop it as a multi-sensory area for the children to use, with lots of exciting things inside. So far I've got some rope lights, a fibre-optic lamp, a disco ball and some torches. Has anybody done anything similar? Would really welcome any of your ideas as to what I can get to put inside to make it fab!!!

I have been scouring the Playing with Sounds Document in order to do training and I have found this very useful paragraph which comes from the DfES response to the phonics seminar held in 2003. "The National Literacy Strategy starts to teach letter identification, segmentation and blending for writing and reading in later Foundation Stage (Reception). The term phonics is also applied to activities appropriate to the Early Foundation stage such as playing with environmental sounds, rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration as these are crucial to nurturing the phonemic awareness which is necessary for learning to read and spell. There is no intention to introduce children to …

Confidentiality Issues

Hi there everyone. I'm going to have a moan about confidentiality issues with parents in schools. Here's my gripe: On Friday, I accidently left a piece of paper on the side in my classroom stating all the children's parts in this years Christmas Play. A parent came into the classroom to say goodbye to their child, and saw the piece of paper, picked it up, and then started telling the children what characters they all were. I was so annoyed with her, as the list was not finalised and we hadn't told the children their parts yet because of this. I asked her not to tell the children the parts, and her reply was: 'you shoouldn't have left it lying around then, should y…

Noise!

Hi all, I'm sure we've discussed this before, but I've had a really noisy day today, & I need some advice/help! Please feel free to make some simple suggestions, I won't feel patronised, but I feel I'm losing the plot! My class just use very loud voices during their play indoors all the time. I think I know who the noisy ones are, it's just that there are at least 10 of them, so targetting individuals is too time consuming. Let's see - I've tried stoping the class, talking about how nice & quiet it is, but that doesn't help. Done the puppet thing, showing how unpleasant it is for the others when they shout, that doesn't seem to help either! Also …

I read an article a while ago and have just found it again and would like to share the fact that the law states the use of DVDs or videos outside the home is deemed to be a public performance and requires a licence, therefore if you are showing the children in the setting with pre-recorded films or educational programmes you are making a performance and you need a licence. Complying with this can be very expensive. In some instances pre-schools and nurseries may be exempt but this should be checked. We have occasionally shown clips of videos related to topics in the past but we will not be in the future. Do other setting use this resource? Will you now? I am rel…

Help-

Hi I have been on courses, read books, devised timetables etc but still can't do the whole inside-outside areas. I am fine on a warm sunny day when there is no rain forecast, but when the rain comes down with seconds notice and it is blooming chilly out there, what do you all do? I have set out the outdoor area on numerous occasions and suddenly screamed at the children to run indoors, and grab equipment as you go! The sand has to be covered and the pit dragged in, the carpets rolled up before they get soaked, the bricks put away and any dressing up things well what do you do with soaking wet clothes? We all have wellies and coats to do puddle work and spontaneous ac…
