Tidy Up Time

Dear all, Thinking about going back to school tomorrow, and I found my heart sinks as I contemplate the regular battle to get all the children perticipating in tidy up time. I'd love to get some fresh ideas to try to make it go better - I've tried one or two things over the years but none has really worked for me! It's especially important this half term as my TA's off for a few weeks and a parent is going to do her job for a while (gulp!) She's lovely of course, but I don't want her to see me being a moany old cow!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Dianne xxx

Classroom Layout

Hi there! i ve just completed (nearly) my 1st year as an EY teacher, have previously been in KS1. Loved every minute, apart from the very recent OFSTED just had. However, the EY coordinator continously criticises the layout of the classroom, even though i ve only moved a few pieces of furniture arund the outskirts because of child safety and want to see the children at all time. the areas of the classroom are divided into the 6 elg's between 2 classroom which are 'opened' in the afternoon for 'workshop'. some of the areas are only physically sectioned off where furniture allows, but the rsources for each area are right next to them, there s labels everywhere etc. please…

Hi, would just like to get some feedback regarding worksheets! I am quite strongly opposed to them, and have been trying to suggest that we no longer use them in our pre-school setting as I think they stilt creativity, and we should be play-based, and not working! However, a lot of our staff seem to be of the opinion that children should be doing them as preparation for school, and because parents like it. I'd love to know what thoughts everyone else has on this, and what you do in your settings, as it's become very controversial in ours!! Thanks

Irish Travellers (sometimes known as "itinerants" or "Tinkers") are a very small minority group in Ireland. They make up less than 1% of the population with approximately 23,000 people in the Republic and another 1,500 in the North. It is also estimated that there are about 15,000 Irish travellers in Britain and another 7,000 in the USA. Irish Travellers belong to a distinct ethnic group within Ireland. They have their own language, beliefs and social customs which have been made stronger over time due to their exclusion and marginalisation from mainstream "settled" society. Occasionally Irish Travellers have been confused with the Roma or Gypsies in England, who des…

Why do parents want their children to attend playgroup at such a young age .Why can't they just enjoy them at home.I find that my 'rising threes'are just developing social play but the younger ones are only at the stage of parallell play anyway. My eldest child who is now 31 went to a playgroup at the age of 3.9yrs settled in easily went to school at 5.3 yrs.The week before he went to school I showed him how to write his own name.He learnt to read within weeks. My daughter was the same although she had taught herself to read by recognising numbers and signs before she went to school. They have done very well for themselves .We didn't have a lot of money spare but on the 3 …

Out Door Play
by Guest- 8 replies

I work in a local authority nursery. We have 15 - 20 children per session AM and PM we have a large room and a lovely garden with an area for bikes and a climbing frame. We also have our large brick play outside and in warm weather we take lots of activities outside. Our staffing is one teacher one NNEB. At present we spend 45 minutes each session outside longer in the summer but have been advised we should have in and out play throughout the session. This means only one staff member inside to cover FTA / computers/ all the table activities / construction/ role play/ sand / water/ book corner, answer the phone and the front door. Do you think this is realistic? What do y…

hi all thanks for all the feed back so far Ive been spending time reading and have a few thoughts, I seem to be coming across alot of re-occuring issues so if any one has an opinion I know the foundation stage folder leans towards play as the best method for teaching but I wondered are the inspectors encouraging free play or do they like to see structured play, To those who have had education inspections - are the inspectors open minded to play or do they ask about more structured learning?
