Input Welcomed For My New Book!

Following the success of The Thinking Child, I'm busy working on a new book that has been a long time in the planning stages. <_< This book is about the development of emotional intelligence in children, and how to promote 'emotional literacy' through storymaking and fiction. It will be accompanied by a series of children's books, called The Can-Do Club , along with a lot of practical activities for the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. If anyone has any information that they'd be happy to share about how they address or plan for emotional intelligence in their setting, or observations about children's emotional development and how it impacts their learni…

please can ayone comment on the following situation. I work in a first school and have a new head. This head is very keen to integrate nursery into all main school activities which is commendable. However there has been an outing arranged for the last friday before xmas when the whole school from nursery to year 4 will be walking through a busy town centre to the cinema. This is a long walk and upon voicing my concerns they were dismisssed and I have been told Nursery must go.I am really worried about the safety of 40 3/4 yea olds on this journey and wonder if I am being negative. The ratioo for off site visits is 1 child to 4 adults but we may not have this.I have been tol…

Research Project

Hi there This is new to me. I was advised to try this forum as there may be lots of people out there interested in the same topic as I am researching. I am doing a PDA in Childcare and Education and I am conducting a study to see if there is still a place for the traditional playgroup. I am the Play Leader of what I would call a traditional playgroup in Scotland. We are managed by a volunteer committee, have paid qualified staff, are funded by fees, fundraising and grants and provide a safe, happy and stimulating environment for our 2yrs 3 months - 4 yrs children. Our main emphasis is on play and the social and emotional development of the child. We are ve…

Organising Reception
by Guest- 2 replies

Hiya. I was wondering if anyone can help? I am an NQT going for a job in a reception class. I love the foundation stage, however so far my experiences have only covered nursery. I was wondering how do fellow practitioners organise and teach numeracy and literacy in reception? Do you choose to follow the strategies rather than just the foundation document to aid your planning? Or how do you organise group work or whole class teaching, taking into account of differentiation? Sorry this seems like a huge question to ask, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks, Sarah

Involving Parents

I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me. Last term I ran a course titled "Invovling Parents in Their Children's Learning" for Early Years practitioners. The course went very well and people went away with lots of ideas on to get parents more involved in their settings, and also with two important messages. First, that by involving parents you are actually being twice as effective because you are enlisting the efforts of their first teachers (and most significant people in their lives). And secondly, that parents are not a homogenous group, and that no one system is going to work with every parent. As practitioners we need to be as flexible with famili…

Managing Behaviour

We have a child in the pre-school at the moment who we are having problems with. He is 3 years old and has very good language skills. The problem is they are probably too good and he has an answer for everything! He seems to get a lot of attention at home, despite having a baby sister of 4 months, and I think he is spoken to very much like an adult. Consequently, when he is with us he finds it difficult to share the attention of adults. He is quite rough with the other children, pushing them over and hitting them, but says that it was an accident. One conversation he had with a member of staff, after hurting a boy in the group, went like this: Staff "That wasn't a very n…

Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone has any strategies for helping me to overcome a behavioural issue I am having with 1 of my class. She is very stubborn in the mornings, by the afternoon she is delightful again and from what i know of her home life their are 'issues'. However she is getting more and more disruptive and although it is only little things like refusing to lay down in the hall for a PE cool down, refusing to take off her socks and sit down on the carpet she is getting worse. Im not really sure what to do with her. Have tried stickers etc. was considering a home school book but as her mother is not the most supportive of parents Im not sure this wi…

Please Help

Hi I wasn't sure where to post this, there doesn't seem to be a forum specifically for the problem I have. I am a student studying early childhood studies at Roehampton University and I work part time. At present I am not working in the early years field, I work with a fifteen year old boy who has muscular dystrophy. I know that this may seem to be very irrelevent but I thought some of you might be able to point me in the right direction and give me some tips. I work for an agency which pays my wages to work with this boy (I'll call him 'M'), I spend all day Saturday with him, take him out, make him lunch, help him to wash and put him to bed etc... I have spoken t…

Hi I am a parent helper in my daughter's nursery and I find I am often asked to do activities with a small group of children, including a boy who speaks very little English. I would like to make any contact I have with this child to be as useful to him as possible. Does anyone have any hints or tips about working with children whose first language is not English?

Hi the pre-school I manage is part of a Ltd company with six other pre-schools. We are allocated a budjet each tern for resources etc. but we rely on fundraising for extras for the children e.g bithday presents, christmas party. We have asked parents to have a fundraising committee but have had no interest we have also tried to sell tickets for raffle but still no luck. Has anyone got any ideas to get parents interested in being on committee and digging in those pockets. Sophie
