The 'More than a score' coalition has launched its critique of new government proposals for testing four-year olds, and is calling for the plans to be dropped. At a meeting hosted by Shadow Early Years Minister Tracy Brabin, parents, teachers and educational experts from the More Than a Score coalition exposed what they believe are flaws in the Government’s latest plans to test very young children, and called for the proposal to be dropped. The More Than a Score dossier 'Baseline Assessment: it doesn’t add up' shows that the Government’s plans are statistically uninformed and educationally damaging. You read about the MTAS coalition here Nursery World magazine have r…

Good Evening Everyone, How has the start of term gone for you? I am looking for something that breaks down the Early Years Outcomes into smaller steps so that I can track progress. Does anybody have anything that they are willing to share please? Thanks in advance Mel

Trying to think of an exciting starter. The learning objective is to segment the sounds in simple words and for the HA to write eg labels and captions. Was thinking of either reading Dear Santa , then they write a list or have a sack with some objects and they try to spell words e.g. pen ( that good be an activity) . The other idea is a that Rudolph has disappeared and we make reindeer dust, look outside for clues. I originally was going to do Stickman and was making posters but that would be too hard for the majority. I know it is ridiculous but my head is now in a muddle! Thank you

Hi Everyone, Hope you are all having or had a good half term break. We are currently discussing RWI at my school. We began last year and we can see an improvement in learning and recall of sounds and with reading although our Y1 Phonics screening was low. Our biggest concern is writing - we didn't get any exceeding writers in this years EYFSP. As writing leader as well as EYFS Leader I have a constant niggle about the teaching of writing, the quantity of independent writing, is RWI enough for Reception and Year 1. I followed it last year and did as was asked by the Reading Leader, however, I just felt that our youngest children were missing out on all those…

Hi all, Some fantastic information and advice on here so thought I would share a question I have. I am in my second year teaching EYFS (Reception) as I was previously in year 1 and 2. Recently subject leaders are wanting to see planning for different subjects e.g. science, history and geography etc. I obviously don't have these as they are different but I am aware some areas do link in to the National Curriculum. I was told by someone who was formally a Reception class teacher that I should be teaching 'Science' as 'knowledge and understanding the world- the world' every week as all EYFS areas are as important as one another and there should be some focused adult led tea…

I have a friend whose daughter has just started reception and when reading at home she is able to sound out words accurately but not blend them. My friend has asked for some ideas to help. I'm going to suggest practising lots of phase 1 type stuff - oral segmenting and blending. However, has anyone got any other ideas? I've been out of reception for a couple of years now and it's telling!

Hey everybody, Me and my colleague are entering our second year of teaching and we have been given the opportunity to change our planning structure. Currently, we teach a 10/15 minute input on a topic and then send the children off to 4 different activities. For example: Activity 1- Red Group Activity 2- Blue Group Activity 3- Yellow Group Activity 4- Green Group The next day we will teach another input linked to the topic and then send them to a different activity. This means that by the end of the week, each group will have completed every activity. I think they call it 'round robins'. Once they have finished the activity, they are allowed to choose from the…

We are looking to buy in an electronic assessment tracking system just for Year R. We need to do away with all paper observations and add photos directly to the assessment system. What would you recommend? Thank you for any suggestions.
