Am I reading the handbook correctly when it says that staffing in Reception only needs to be 1:30? I had always thought it was 1:13 and I am trying to find out a definitive answer to show my head teacher, however I can not see any reference to these figures in the latest document. Thank you.

Have you ever encountered any school or research that has been successful with exposing Early Years EAL students to more than 2 languages?

Ofsted have today released their 'Bold beginnings: The Reception curriculum in a sample of good and outstanding primary schools' report. In the report, findings from research led by Gill Jones HMI, recommendations for practice and considerations for DfE are raised. Click on the link (above) to read the full document or here are the main headlines: Executive summary A good early education is the foundation for later success. For too many children, however, their Reception Year is a missed opportunity that can leave them exposed to all the painful and unnecessary consequences of falling behind their peers. During the summer term 2017, Her Majesty’s Inspe…

One of my schools is thinking of using the PE & school sport premium to fund a TA to lead some specific physical activity work in reception. I'm thinking that this could include both fine and gross motor work and was wondering if anyone had any ideas of things they'd found particularly effective?

Hi I'm looking for some formal guidance on Breakfast Club provision run by a school. I need to clarify what ratios and what training and qualification would be required for a provision which includes Reception children. I can only find 'guidance' and the EYFS Framework isn't too clear!

Hello all, Just after some thoughts really. I have recently joined a school as EY lead where we carry out Home Visits for the Nursery Class and Reception. I'm just wondering whether anyone else does the same in their school? I am a huge fan of Home visits - I personally have always done them both as a Nursery teacher and Reception teacher. I completely value the benefits.. but I'm not sure whether we should do 2? My worry is that it might be frustrating for parents to repeat all the information a year later and give a bad impression of our communication across the phase. I am currently thinking that I will work on the communication and transition between N …

The Department for Education is considering how to update the existing Sex and Relationship guidance which, was last updated in 2000, and is therefore now out of date. The updated guidance will support schools in delivering the new subjects of Relationships Education at primary and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) at secondary, as well as, potentially, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE). You can access the consultation here. The consultation closes 12th February 2018.

The TES has published a lovely article by Lisa Jarmin about the experience of teaching Reception aged children, particularly in the first half of the Autumn term - when the whole concept of school is new to them all! "As a student teacher, I approached my new Reception class placement with confidence. I’d just aced a placement in Year 1 and was pretty sure that Reception would be much of the same, just with slightly smaller children. Four hours into my first day, I stood in the middle of what felt like carnage in its most pure form, holding a poo that a child had handed to me (“Surprise! This fell out of my bum”) and reassessed my position: my surroundings were …

I have a 4 year old girl who had been extra cuddling with one of the boys in the classroom. I had spoken with them, that a soft and short hug was fine now and then, but no extended/long hugs were necessary... the same for kisses on the check. We spoke about respect towards each other's bodies and what is age appropriate. Yesterday, the same girl, I caught her touching a boys private area and he did the same. It was then that it came out that she had kissed another boy on his lips in previous days. I spoke with both of them. Later in the afternoon I see her do it again (touching and laughing about it). I was firm and said "No" and I wrote a note to her parents as they do …
