What an interesting and well written article Sue R. Discussing the value of participant observation really brought home to me how important and valuable that is, both for the practitioner to truly observe how the child is developing, and to involve the practitioner directly in the child's learning and next steps. I also think your use of this approach is a good way of having a structured, but non-threatening, way of interacting with parents and the parents feeling valued. I think this article will really support many of us in our roles. Well done and thank you.

A joy and inspiration to read and a further joy to imagine and picture in my mind in practice. Well done Sue, you are a credit to the EY's profession, I can't wait to read about the Mosiac approach experience, but will have to for a year or so. HERE Peggy

Well what an eye-opener! I thought I would go in search of Helen's articles about recent Ofsted inspections so I could print them off to read tomorrow, but my eyes alighted on a new article about boys' drawing and so I took a look. What struck me particularly is the author's conclusion that practitioners should not be worried that drawing for children will stifle their creativity, but rather that drawing needs to be modelled in the same way as writing. I have always been wary of drawing for children when they say they cannot draw something because I fear that I might be reinforcing their view that they cannot draw (although heaven knows I'm useless at drawing and…

I've just read this excellent thought provoking article. My first thoughts as I read it were; Great maths has been included in the 'category' of creativity. I'm not a particularly good mathematician, but I do love numbers in the context of 'playing around with them'. I like the number 8 just because of it's shape, the way it flows when written. I would have likd to have read more about the maths element of creativity. I love the way this article has broadened the often narrow view of what creativity is defined as, yet on the other hand some of the 'definition' quotes are quite elloquantly and profoundly spoken. Showing that some people see creativity as more than …

Hello! It's great to read of interest in emergent writing in some of the discussions here! Perhaps some people have begun to explore children's mathematical graphics (mathematical mark-making) in their setting or class? What's your experience? Maybe you have some questions arising from our articles published on the website?

Hello came across this thought would pass it on as it is very reassuring:- Members of the National Strategies’ Early Years team have also recently been involved in several EYFS conferences. While these have been generally positive events, we have received some disturbing feedback about the quantity of paperwork that practitioners report is being expected of them by LAs in order to support the implementation of the learning and development requirements, and to provide evidence of young children’s achievement. It has been really encouraging to see the enthusiasm with which local authorities have embraced both the EYFS and the new duty to promote better outcomes for c…
