Hi guys I'm new here and my first post is about a worry I have regarding my son and a development delay He is 5 and starting school after the summer but he cannot tie his own shoelaces or zip up his jacket so I'm just wondering if the school will help with that as I'm slightly worried. I'm not so worried about the shoelaces because I trust that the school will tie his shoelaces for him as they won't want him to become a trip hazard when outside due to untied shoelaces. Its the jacket I'm more worried about so can you guys reassure me regarding the fact that they'll zip his jacket for him when necessary :). After school is less of a worry because I c…

Working with children can provide you with great challenges and joy every day. I have met many teachers who are confident to speak in front of a hall full of children but ask them to speak in front of their peers – other teachers or their SLT, and suddenly that confidence disappears. Being in the classroom means you may see things from a different angle than your SLT do. You may also see things that are being introduced that you think will benefit your school – perhaps to do with a curriculum area, children’s wellbeing, supporting a positive learning environment, or the kind of assessment data you’re collecting. So, how can you approach your SLT so that they consid…

I have been teaching in Early Years for 10 years, my Reception class are working significantly below plus 5 EHCP children. Listening and attention is really poor, carpet times are challenging, even just 5 minutes for the register is really hard-work. I haven’t had a year like this, though we are use to low starting points. I am wondering if anyone has different timetables to share to see if I can try something new.

I am posting this here as I can't seem to be able to post topics in the forest school section of the forum :O. As I stated in my first thread last night, one of the options I had for my son was a forest school as he loves the outdoors and tbh it's still something I'll consider throughout the summer for future so I'm just wanting to know the sort of things that forest schools do as I'd presume it would be a lot different than a forest or outdoor nursery where it will be more outdoor play and learning etc?

How many of you remember those staged school debates back in the day and one of the old perennials was school uniform. I am sure your debates ran along similar line to the pros and cons as per below: As a child, apart from not liking my Black & White uniform with ridiculously bright orange PE shorts/shirts I never really gave the buying of it much thought although, as a child in a single parent family I probably should have and taken more care of it! So reading this news article made me sit up and think about the number of families struggling to purchase school uniform for their little ones about to embark on their new adventure at primary scho…

Dear all, I work in Reception - full time teacher, 1 adult supporting throughout the week but differs who this may be depending on the day and timetabling. We have 20 children. I have a range of needs and I feel like I'm struggling to differentiate for areas such as phonics - any suggestions. Feeling very overwhelmed at the moment to show progress and learning through play. Thanks, Gem

Hi everyone. A Reception setting I know has two areas - one indoor classroom and an adjacent small outdoor area. There is one classteacher and only 15 children. No teaching assistant. The children can move independently between the two areas, but that means one of the areas will have no adult supervision. Is the school meeting statutory requirements? Both areas are seen as 'one' EYFS classroom, meeting the 1:30 ratio for Reception children? If the answer is 'no', could you point me in the direction of any statutory guidance to help the school out? Can't see my question answered in the Framework. Thank you.

Helen talks to Laura Bimson about how she's adapted her curriculum, learning environment and observations system this year, in the light of the revised EYFS. You can listen here.

hi, I am new to Reception and am just wondering how you go about organising your day. Presently the mornings work well but the afternoons are long and the children can't sustain concentration. Help!
