Play Theorists

Hi! I need some help (as always) for my latest module on the FD. We are now doing Play and the Early Years Curriculum which I have been quite looking forward too actually! I'm writing an observation at present to include in my assessment and I need to include theories of play in the evaluation. I know that Froebel, Montessori and Steiner are all play theorists, but I was hoping for something a little bit differrent so was wondering if anybody knew of any other theorists relating to play that I might be able to have a look at? I've done a quick Google and found a few hard to read pieces but can't seem to find what I am looking for, unless I'm just not reading it right. …

Hi there - i need to develop a programme of training around using observations (incidental & formal) to inform planning / develop a picture of the whole child / assessment etc for staff across the foundation stage (nursery-rec) in my setting & thought starting with a questionnaire about satff's knowledge /experience & undersatanding of observations & their use would be a good starting point - does anybody have any proformas based on this that they have used successfully before?? or know of any sites where i may be able to track something along these lines down??? Many thanks, in anticipation, for your help

Sweden's informal and play-centred early schooling may be the reason the average six-year-old can neither read nor write. Yet by age ten pupils have the highest levels of literacy in Europe. Early Years: How Do They Do it in Sweden? investigates this surprising success. Watch on TV: Wednesday 12.30pm and 8.30pm How do they do it in Sweden?

Our nursery children are being asked to sit ,all be it for a short time ,for an "assembly" because "they need to learn how to sit and listen" Can anyone direct me to some evidence to support the fact that this is one of the hardest things to ask a just 3 year old to do.They do sit and listen to stories etc but not with the learning intention of "sitting and listening"

Maths Day/week
by Guest- 5 replies

We're trying to raise the standard and enjoyment of maths in school - particularly problem solving and are thinking of having a fun maths day/trail or something. I remember years ago reading in Child Ed something about a day that I think was based on Jim and the Beanstalk with lots of exciting activities around the book eg. measuring the giant's head for the wig etc. Just wondering if anyone has done a fun maths day with all the school, or have any ideas (doesn't have to be based around a book). Our initial idea is to have two different 'things' one for FS/KS1 and another for KS2 rather than trying to have something right through the school. The classes would be …

Data Protection Act/confidentiality
by Guest- 2 replies

Well, I have spent the last 2 days doing ALL of my outstanding college work and at long last, it's finished so that means I can have a well deserved rest tomorrow night before college again on Tuesday . I am researching now for my parent module and one of the assessment tasks is to research the data protection act. I can't seem to find any sites that are very useful. Some are either too simplistic or just plain waffle, which is really hard to interpret into English. Any ideas where I could find some information on this? It would be a big help. Thanks as always!

Hi I wonder if anyone can help what i would like is the natural progression of learning intial letter sounds and how this is supposed to progress through to the end of reception. I really want to know what other people do and whether we should be formally teaching intial letter sounds in nursery. Does it hurt to teach them the jolly phonic actions or should it still be discrete. HELP im confused with all the new initatives that have come out.
