Hi all I have read lots of posts about nervous students about to embark on a SCITT/GTP etc. I am on the other side….I am a nervous tutor about to embark on her first session! I have been asked to deliver a 3 hour session on play. I would be interested to hear from any previous or current students or anyone who has pearls of wisdom, on what they would like covered in an ideal session on play. 3 hours is an awfully long time, so I am hoping I may be able to split it in half so that I can give them a task to complete and then review it on the second session. So far I am thinking: Stages and types of play. Importance and benefits of play – focusing on a few theorists,…

I have read Catherine Gaunt's pertinent article (NW, online: 29th Jan 2013, ‘More Great Childcare’: Unions worry that EYPs will be sidelined) concerning the effects of changes to Early Years Teacher Training and agree whole-heartedly with the remarks made by Claire Dent. I was relieved, this week, to have completed my final setting visit assessment. However, I am now devastated by the government’s plans to supersede Early Years Professionals (EYPs) with Early Years Teachers (EYTs). I am certainly not alone in thinking that employers (particularly schools and foundation units) will prefer to employ EYTs above EYPs because the new training will incorporate appropria…

HI all, I have a job interview on Thursday and I am required to plan a 20 min teaching activity with 10 mixed ability reception children. The focus is language and literacy and I was wondering if anyone could share any ideas you may have or things that you have done in the past that have worked well. I have a few ideas but I would appreciate any thoughts so I can develop my ideas further. Any help and advice greatly appreciated.

New And Trying To Get Onto Pgce!

Hi everyone! I am a new member and have applied to do a PGCE this year. I have already had one interview in December, but unfortunately I was unsuccessful The problem I have is that the feedback they gave was rather generic and I am feeling a bit insecure about it. I am 33 and everything I have done over the past 4 years (uni and re-doing GCSE Maths) has culminated at this point and I feel a bit dispondant. I applied very late last year and only had one interview, which again was unsuccessful, so I have used this time wisely by volunteering at a local school (for over a year), redo my maths (exam in June), read as much information as I can, learnt Makaton and sti…

Hi everyone, Well I start the GTP in September and have been given lots of reading to do. I have also found books in the library about being a successful trainee teacher. I need to read children's books, study for my skills tests, prepare folders. Feeling overwhelmed already!! all that as well as getting to grips with a new curriculum, assesment, standards, stratergies...aragh! I'm very confident in the foundation stage as I have been a nursery nurse for many years but will be moving to year one for my teaching practice. Any advice from all of you who have been through the GTP or similar training? What reading should I prioritise? It's going to be a struggle getti…

I have an interview on the 23rd on November for the GTP program. As part of that interview I will be required to discuss and debate current issues facing teaching in the 21 st century.I have given this some thought and have thought of a couple of issues myself such as budget cuts and safeguarding. I would be grateful for some other ideas and input from you all. Has anyone looked into this before? What would you say are the current issues facing education? I am confident debating the issues in the early years but have no experience in other year groups, so I would be grateful if you could share yours. Thank you in anticipation.

I'm sure there are a number of you in a similar position to me. I acheived EYPS last year, gained my BAhons at the beginning of this year and manage a lovely EYrs setting, where I've been working for the last 8 or so years. At a recent meeting with other practitioners I discovered I am earning much less than an NQT would be earning and am on the same hourly rate as an assistant in an LA setting nearby. For all of my training, commitment and hard work, I still trail behind in the salary stakes and find it unbelievable someone with limited responsibility and experience can be earning so much more. I must add I work in the voluntary sector of the PVI sector and have a fab …

Routes Towards Qts

Hi everyone As some of you know I am a preschool manager, and I co-own and co-manage my preschool with my friend. With all the emphasis on early years managers having a relevant degree-level qualification I am currently considering my options (as lots of us are) for further training. I have a Maths degree so it seems to make more sense for me to do a PGCE for FS/KS1 rather than the Foundation degree as it opens up more options for me career-wise. However I live in Southampton and haven't found anywhere locally that does a Foundation/KS1 PGCE (Southampton and Winchester only offer KS1/KS2). Can anyone suggest any other routes to PGCE that may be possible or know…
